So many people ask for BIOS files, but do they really fix anything?

I've noticed there's a surge over the last 18 months of people seeking BIOS files but it seems strange; are people *really* blowing their BIOS's?

In 30 years I've only replaced a single one (about 12 months ago, and there were still legitimate electronics issues too, so tossed the lot); all the other faults were something wrong in the electronics.

Genuinely curious - are people really getting failed BIOS's or is it a case of "wishful thinking" that a new BIOS will fix their dead machine?

EDIT: Maybe it's just to bypass passwords?

Most bios are asked because they are locked out(password)
Some do fail,i have about 10 fail last year .

I had a W530 that Lenovo's update software got ahold of. It didn't POST next boot.
Things I've fixed: anything from semis to crappy Chinese $2 radios, and now an IoT Dildo....

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Re: So many people ask for BIOS files, but do they really fix anything?

The problems concerning the bios are relatively recent, one of the first laptops that suffered from this problem, I think, was the asus EEPC.
Some brands, especially asus, hp and now also lenovo, suffer from this problem. I sent to assistance, because under warranty, a never used lenovo that on first power is stuck. The assistance has informed us that they had to reprogram the bios. I think there is a problem of motherboard design. Some have created paid sites where to download the complete bios (unfortunately you can not download the bios from the manufacturer because incomplete ...) and have many customers because the first thing that a "technician" attempt, even without necessity, is reprogram the bios. I think that the bios is the culprit in 30% excluding cases of deleting the password.
What many do not know is that by using a dump is how to make a clone, if you need official assistance from the manufactory, the identification code does not match.

I usually need bios dumps because of corrupted old bios.
This usually happens because of the logs a bios keeps [hdd errors , battery errors...] I guess at HP models.
I rarelly need one for a password removal.
I also try to mod the "new" one with the s/n of the old one.

since uefi bios started its a mess, before most problem was wrong bios flash or flash procedure goes wrong

              🛠️ MSI GP75 Leopard MS-17E71 – No Display, Deep BIOS/EC Troubleshooting
              by macabook
              Hello everyone,

I’m currently working on a dead MSI GP75 Leopard (MS-17E71) motherboard (i7 CPU, NVIDIA GPU) with a no display/no backlight issue initially. After extensive investigation, I’m at a critical stage involving EC firmware, BIOS/ME region interaction, and possible deep corruption. I'm seeking advanced insight from anyone with experience in EC/BIOS sync issues or PCH-level behavior. Here’s a full breakdown:
              🧩 Initial Issue
              • Board powers on (fans spin, keyboard lights up and can be adjusted, caps lock led lights), but no display or backlight
              • External display (HDMI) shows
              ...

[Problem/ Request] Bricked TongFang GK7MRFR BIOS
              by cr4zychriss
              Hello everyone,
I am requesting urgent assistance to unbrick my laptop, a rebranded TongFang GK7MRFR chassis. The laptop is completely dead following a faulty in-OS EC flash attempt.
I have successfully used a CH341A programmer and can read/write/verify both flash chips, but using my backups/extractions has failed to restore power. The root cause is likely a corrupted Intel Management Engine (ME) region or an incompatible EC/BIOS pairing. System & Hardware Details

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo UX8402ZA BIOS
              by pirati
              Hello everyone,

I recently bought a non-working Asus Zenbook Pro Duo OLED UX8402ZA that was listed for parts only. The seller mentioned that it had no display output but that the charging lights worked.

When the laptop arrived (without a charger and SSD), I connected a charger and confirmed with a multimeter that it was charging the battery. However, when I tried to power it on, only the backlight of the secondary display came on. There was no image, and it didn’t boot into the BIOS.

I decided to try flashing a new BIOS, but since I didn’t want to desolder...
