    Need help with 820-00165

    Hi Guys!

820-00165 all work fine until i close the screen, when i open it its black screen but the keyboard light and CapsLock on, I have to turn it off and then on again and then it works normally. I noticed that when I press the ignition button, it takes 15-20 seconds. to display the apple logo.
The problem is wont wake up after sleep.
    Sorry for bad English.

Check the trackpad and LIO flex cables for corrosion. SMC LID signal goes to both. If the trackpad cable is damaged, can also potentially cause full fan speed/CPU throttling.

I put another checked LIO flex cables, SMC LID is 3,4v, replaced trackpad cable, fan speed is normal. As I said, all work fine, problem is wont wake up after sleep when i open it its black screen.

        Re: Need help with 820-00165

The lid sensor is a hall effect switch in the LIO board, triggered off a magnet in the screen. Have you tried another LIO board, and if so, does SMC_LID toggle on lid open? What other troubleshooting have you done?

I put another LIO board, and behaves the same, SMC_LID is same 3.4v before and after closing the lid.

            Post the voltage readings for:

            SMBUS_SMC_3_SCL

            SMBUS_SMC_3_SDA

                SMBUS lines are ok.

SMBUS_LID is not working correctly. You should see a different reading when closed than when it is open.

Suspecting the same as other comments, that the LIO board is not driving this pin so that the SMC @ U5000 can monitor this logic level change and then turn ON / OFF the backlight.

Can you remove the SSD and see if the logic board powers on every time and shows the display ? You should see the blinking folder graphic.

When you do NOT see the display working, can you use a flashlight (phone) to view the display graphics ? Try from the BACKSIDE of this LCD display - perhaps the fault is that your backlight is faulty.

Yes when i move ssd i see the blinking folder, and ever i turn the ssd and raise the OS everything is fine, but when I lower the cover it goes into sleep mode and when I raise the screen the keyboard lights up and the screen is black and when I turn on the light from the phone and put on backside of lcd, nothing is visible even the light from the phone.

Try the phone light on the front face - do you see any of the usual graphics / flashing folder icon ?

Do you see any fan spin ?

If not - remove all power. Remove the LCD. It is not required for this first level testing.

Without the LCD, apply the power adapter.

Do you see the magsafe LED on ? What color is the LED ?

Are you using the official magsafe adapter ?

Yes, I see magsafe led first green and then orange and fan is spin.
                          Yes, I using official magsafe 2 45W.

                            Good.

Check the contacts on the LCD screen cable -> all clean & shiny ? Ok to use alcohol (IPA) to clean the contacts.

Attach the LCD again. Can you see the backlight after the fan spin ?

If not, measure the backlight voltage for the LCD.

See here for other details on this logic board:

Checked contacts on the LCD screen and all is clean.
I connected lcd again and have this.
But the problem is still present after going into sleep mode it no longer turns on.

Good - can see my selfie.

Remove all power. Remove the trackpad cable.

Power on again with the adapter.

See attached (stolen from beetstech website) - use tweezers to turn the logic board on/off across these pads.

Does the logic board power on and show the display every time you use the tweezers ? Repeat this testing a few times to confirm.

                                If not..

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode. Confirm the resistance of R5171. Should be ~100k ohms.

I did as you said a couple of times and logic board is power on and show the display every time, R5171 is 100k.

                                    Good.

                                    Remove all power.

                                    Attach the trackpad cable again.

Apply power but use the same on / off PCB pads with tweezers.

Can you turn on the logic board everytime ? Do this multiple times to confirm.

Good. I think your issue is with the keyboard on/off button.

Can you now test with the keyboard on/off button ?

Is this flaky and sometimes fails ?

The keyboard inside this unit is a membrane button - I recall this issue on this forum and we used resistors if I recall correctly to fix the fault.

Let me review while you test with the keyboard only (no tweezers).
