iPad 2019 not charging

Hey everyone!

Have an iPad 2019 (820-01686) here that's not charging. When it came in I tested it with the Tristar tester, and it failed. Replaced the tristar, no fail on the tester anymore, but still not charging. It's drawing 0amp. Replaced the dockconnector to make sure, and the Tristar a second time, but still no luck.

What should I be looking at next? Thanx in advance!

See attached. Suspecting the soldering of the referenced dockflex pcb joints. Took me 3 attempts to resolve this and went well after this rework. Apple wanted the client to buy another iPAD. The client used a cheap cable from the dollar store and it got stuck and killed the Apple charging port.

Be patient with this area so to not rip off any pads.

Do not use hot air - only soldering iron.

I've used hot air to remove the old one, and soldered the new one on.

I've reworked it, seems to be ok, but still no luck. What would be the next step?

I know it sounds redundant - felt the same but the fault for us was still with this cable connection onto the main board.

Consider to flux it well and touch upon each pad again with a soldering iron. The 0A current draw is the give away for this fault.

Are you comfortable with the Tristar chip replacement ? Would you recall which exact Tristar version was used ? Did you make it 'dance' to confirm the ball joints of the WLCSP package are down without shorts ? We had the fun of replacing that part at least 2 times as well.

What is the history of this device ? Was it dropped ?

I recall some dialog about broken coils which is a common fault but let me dig around.

BTW - which tristar tester are you using ? Ben's ? or using DIODE mode testing ?

If DIODE mode testing - post your diode readings.

No problem, I'm open to any information! Now I wanted to retouch the docking flex again, but snapped off one of the E75_DPAIR1_CONN_P pad off the flex. :') Ordered a new one, so will report back about that tomorrow.

I have done about 20 tristar replacements, so no expert but I'm not new new to this. Did a succesfull tristar replacement on an iPhone 7 right before attempting this iPad

The type of the tristar used is 610A3B.

We have replaced the digitizer of this ipad a good half year ago, but apart from that, nothing special that I know of.

Do you still have 0A current draw?

Is the meter used for this testing capable of showing 3 digits of current?

Do you have a battery connected? If yes, remove it and test again.

After the above, remove all power, meter in resistance mode and check for shorted caps.

Review the PMIC area of caps as per this video:

(Do not recommend the method of power injection at this time - just check for shorted caps, if any)

Hello,

What is the ipad model?
Are you sure it is a charge problem? Does the ipad boot with a charged battery?
Use a power supply to inject VBAT and check the current consumption.
Report reslults.

Still 0.00 draw, my amp meter has 3 digits.
Testing without battery atm.
No shorted caps around the tristar, checked the pmic area and I do measure very low (0.16) resistance on PPVDD_S1_SOC, altho I have no clue if that's supposed to be higher.

Hey! The modelnumber is A2197.
It seems you are right, doesn't boot on a charged battery, I get an Apple logo but it goes off again.
Injected power into vbat, no current consumption until I prompt to boot, then 0.7A for a bit until it dies again.

This is very confusing since the tristar tester indidcated failing tristar, but now it seems to be more then that :') Thanx everyone for the help so far, I'm learning a lot from this process.

Put your charged battery and try to connect the machine in restore or DFU mode to Itunes, then try an update or a restore.

Can't get it to restore, it might be the CPU problem. I'm gonna give up, thank you for the advice everyone.

What do you see when you attempt the restore ? Any error code raised by iTunes ?

Can you test with another lightning cable ? Is the lightning cable a known good and certified with the original Apple chip ? Shorter the better.

Does the host PC recognize the iPAD when you connect with iTunes ? This will confirm the dockflex replacement cable is working along with many other portions of the iPAD design.

It shuts down before anything can happen. Cable is known good, use it daily, and worked fine with the previous device. PC recognises iPad tho. Thing is I'd love to continue on this, I really want to know, but customer doesn't want to wait any longer.

Yup - have met similar customers. They think grass is always greener in the next pasture. They will take it to the local butcher shop with a propeller head who will claim they can fix it 'while they wait' and then they come crawling back for the low level repairs when all else fails. Have seen it over and over. If you can replace tristar chips, this is not your first rodeo and you are very capable of fixing this fault but takes quality time to properly troubleshoot these black boxes. From a recent review, it appears that Apple has lowered their tablet prices so perhaps the customer will just buy another.

That is pretty much what is happening here indeed. The only thing that's bothering me about this, is that I don't know what the actual problem was now. But it is what it is, I thank you for your help!
