Toshiba Satelite L455D-S5976 power light green black screen

Someone gave me this laptop, has no hard drive, trying to start it with a usb stick, I think it must have quit working on them, wondering what I should see on screen with no hard drive, thinking its a bad backlight situation? Thanks.

does the fan spin inside the laptop?
it may be a backlight problem, but not so probable. Probably, it is a bad chip or bad Bios on the mainboard.

The fan was doing a cycle go on spin slow then faster then slower for 10 seconds then off for 3 seconds then repeat, tried external monitor, said no signal, guess I'll try to reflow the video chip.
