    G86-770-A2 vs G86-771-A2

    Hi.

    I'm dealing with a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ31E that originally had a G86-770-A2.

    A few year ago I replaced the nVidia chip successfully with one of the same reference, but presently I'm having trouble replacing it with G86-771-A2 that I believe is compatible.

    - I started by install this G86-771-A2 but the laptop didn't work;
    - I removed, reballed and re-installed it with the sames results;
    - Just for the sake of being sure, I removed the new chip, reballed and installed the old one (that was malfunctioning but still working), the notebook was working again;
    - I ordered a new G86-771-A2, concluding that the first one was bad and installed it, but the laptop refuses to work...

    Is it possible that both new G86-771-A2 where bad???

    Is it possible that the G87-771-A2 is not 100% compatible with the 770 and this laptop is picking that up?

    Any Ideas?

    Cheers.

      Hi.

      Since I'm replacing the 770 with the 771, is 771 also fully compliant of 770?

      I mean some situation like this (just for sake of example):
      - 770 includes A+B+C+D+E
      - 771 includes A+B+C+E
      In this example, 770 may replace 771, but 771 may not replace 770 if D is used/needed.

      Cheers.

        Re: G86-770-A2 vs G86-771-A2

        Hi.

        I made one more test (that I will describe) with one new chip and believe that one of this two options is on the table (or other that I don't know about):
        - 771 is not 100% compatible with 770;
        - all four 771 I received from two sellers are bad.

        The last test I made:
        To prevent the the higher temperature needed (and possible damage) to solder a chip with lead free balls I removed the original balls and reballed it with lead balls (just as I did with the old malfunctioning chip).
        I Just to get exactly the same result I got with other chips.

        I have ordered new 770 chips to take my last conclusion.

        When they arrive and I install them I will give feed back, meanwhile any ideas are welcome.

        Cheers.

          I was trying to edit my last message to add some information and it seems I can't... (or can I?)

          I believe that I have replaced 770 with 771 before with no problems, this is the first time this situation happens.

          I've been now checking the chips and they are not of the same batch (slightly different engraving and completely different lot numbers/letters) of each other, so it couldn't have been a bad batch that I was getting all chips from.

          This two notebook don't seem to support 771 version...

          Cheers.

            I have heard about Sony being fussy about chips a couple years back on a local electronics forum. G86-771-A2 works fine in HP and Dell XPS.

              Hi.

              Thank you for the information, that sheds some light over the situation

              The other laptop where I'm having problems is an ASUS F3S, but on that one I only installed one chip because I noticed the board is starting to degrade fast.

              Do you think that the same situation can be occurring with the ASUS?

              Cheers.

                No, it should work with Asus. It's just that some of the boards they made in that era are shit, they bend, bloat or do other nasties when they are heated up on the rework station.

                  Hi.

                  Update to my quest.

                  The new G86-770-A2 arrived.

                  About the Sony notebook, I installed the new 770 chip and voila, the notebook is working again. This board is awesome, by my counts it took more than 10 heats / 5 chip installs/removals.

                  About the ASUS, the board became damaged when I removed the Chip, 3 pads (with connection) came off, and other 3 without connection also.

                  So, for a closure I can confirm that the 771 is not 100% compatible with 770.

                  Cheers.

                    Sony boards are made by Foxconn, they are very good quality. I am glad you got it fixed.

                      Hello adventurers

                      I have this board and it came from a friend with a shorted EC.
                      I have ordered a new one and replaced it.
                      Now i have 4 Milliamps draw on pluging
                      3VALW and 5VALW present (i know nothing about RSMRST and ECRST because web only has boardview for 16r3 and this modell looks competly different)
                      For EC flash i need KSO3 KSI4 KSI7 KSI6 KSI5. These are all 3.3v EXCEPT KSO3 is 2.2V
                      I have checked the FFC cable connections and they are OK.
                      I have removed and Reballed the IC again, but no change.

                      by Ellos
                      Hi everyone,

                      I'm just starting out with smartphone repairs and picked up a Samsung S21 to work on. Everything functions perfectly except there's absolutely no cellular signal. The SIM card is recognized, WiFi works fine, but zero network signal.

                      I've tested my SIM in another phone and it works perfectly with good signal, so it's definitely the phone.

                      From what I've read online, this issue is usually caused by the network chip needing to be desoldered and reballed since one of the solder balls might be cracked.

                      I think I've located the SOC that...

                      Dear friends, I want to share my experience repairing an ASUS TUF FX506L gaming laptop motherboard: DABKXDMB8E0_F_BKXD. Boardview and schematic are available, as well as the BIOS and ITE ROM.

                      When the customer brought in this laptop, it was initially dead; it showed no signs of booting for any reason. After hours of measurements, checking each stage, MOSFET, and seeing if there was a short circuit in any capacitor, I discovered a strange 0.7V leakage voltage on the 3V_S5 rail, particularly on the PL9 coil, with the board not powered on. There were 3V_LDO and 5V_LDO voltages, which...
