HP Envy 17-da0013dx - no POST, 5 caps lock blinks then power off

I want to ask here before I tell my customer that their 1 year old laptop needs a board.

    Model Info:
    HP ENVY 17-da0013dx
    SN: CND4440NCZ
    Prod: 9S1R7UA#ABA
    Board: LA-N482P Rev: 1A

Symptom: Pressing the power button, the power light comes on. A couple seconds later the caps key show 5 long blinks, then the power light goes out and the machine is off. During this time the current draw is ~1A. The fans will run, and the CPU gets warm.

I've tried reseating RAM, using known-good RAM, power draining EC reset, manually flashing a clean BIOS image from HP. I understand this fault could be a RAM problem, a board problem, or a BIOS problem. Does anyone have thoughts or experience on this? It just seems outrageous to be a board fault with this being a 1 year old machine.

"manually flashing a clean BIOS image from HP" - you mean by unpacking (copy) bios from hp bios update and write it with external programmer?

Correct. I had another HP laptop here which was a couple years older than this one, and it clearly had a BIOS problem, so before investing the time in taking apart the new BIOS file and copying in DMI, I just flashed it clean to se if the machine would boot - and it did, just didn't have any DMI. That was the approach I took on this newer one as well, I just flashed a clean HP BIOS image, but the symptom stayed exactly the same.

You can check the ram slot pins for being loose and if you have ram tester to see if there are any unconnected points to cpu - but that means cpu reballing/reflow.

Yeah, I definitely poked each RAM pin on the headers under a scope - All were snug. I also looked inside the headers to check the internal contacts and they were good as well. Well I appreciate the response. re-balling is above my skill level, so I'll just pronounce this machine dead - whomp.

Hi Gurus, I am wondering if someone might be able to help. I purchased recently this used computer that otherwise looks in mint condition. I worked for 1 week, until one morning I shut down the computer using the power off commands in windows. There was no warranty. This was purchased for my teenager for use at school.
When I went to start the computer up in the afternoon, all the keys lit, but the computer didn't POST. Then the next thing I tried (pressing the power button) resulted in only the...

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
            by PantherDave
            Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

HP EliteBook 850 G8 - Error code / Caps Lock permanently on and blinks twice every 6 seconds
            by Curtissimo
            Hi everyone.

            I have a HP Elitebook 850 G8.
            Serial: 5CG2324XM0
            ProdID 6L8D5EC#ABA
It has a Winbond W25Q256JVEN Chip.

I need to remove BIOS Password.

I made a dump with an CHA341A programmer and NeoProgrammer 2.2.0.10.

            Attached my dump.

I also used the HP Unlocker tool to create an unlocked file (I followed the guidelines)

I also downloaded latest HP BIOS Update (SP158137) which includes 3 .bin files. I found the Number T76 in my original dump, so I used: T76_01210000.bin

            Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
            by eryjus
            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
