You can buy the chip pre-balled? Where would I do that at?

get the number off of the top of the chip and post into ebay, there will be some on their that are reballed, and some that are not probably

What is the best way for someone who has never done it to check and see if they are shorted

Unsolder the MOSFET from the board. First check to see did you have short base - collector - emiter. You can search youtube for tutorial.

Do you have a recommended way to desolder it easily?

Anyone have a tip for getting the old solder on the motherboard to melt? It seems to not want to melt when the iron is applied

Some people add a little more lead on those points allowing melted lead to combine on old lead. Do both on other sides. I used 60 watts soldering iron and a flux. But then hot air does the work fast.
