    Re: HP dv6-3210us No Video

Seems like hp never got it right after that nvidia problem. I used to recommend hp laptops to my customers but now I recommend them to buy other brands. I get calls all the time from customers that have these hp models and its the same broken record all the time. My approach is that it can be reflowed or reballed but if the servicer cannot give a timeframe of longevity, stay away from it. Just pony up the money and purchase a new laptop.

Wow, I feel really luck to have come across an active post dedicated to the same problem I just came down with. I have an HP dv6z-1100 (CTO) that has a blank screen and the 1-blink error code.

So, I should start with replacing the CPU? And if that doesn't work, then reflow the GPU? I don't have any know-how with computer hardware. Replacing the processor sounds doable, but I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable trying the reflow method.

If neither of these work, how can I get the data off of my hard drive? I am a student and need my work off of there as soon as possible.

      Thank you!

remove the hard drive and attached it on a desktop computer.

or buy a hard disk enclosure/ or sata to usb cable will also do the job and connect it to a computer or laptop via usb.

what is the OS of the broken laptop?

My DV5 is still alive and well, and it wasn't particularly cared for either. Last year i had to replace both LCD frame and top cover because my mom dropped it (fortunately the screen escaped intact), and i also replaced the fan a few months ago because it started rattling again, after i'd lubed it about an year ago. But it still works fine, and it's just 3 months shy of being 4 years old.

However, it's been undervolted from day one, because the CPU ran close to its Tj in the summer, and i think that's what helped it survive.

I guess your mileage may vary in certain situations with these hp laptops. Personally, I started recommending that my customers buy the toshiba laptops. They are inexpensive and seem to take a beating. My household owns 3 and there have been no problems whatsoever for years. On the business side of things the toshiba is primarily seen for a broken dc jack, cracked screen, or a front end mosfet. The nec issue has been discussed thoroughly but I have not seen this issue come in yet. However, the hp laptops never come in for a routine problem. Its always reflow or reball related because of video issues. TH3 made a good point about undervolting the cpu. That definitely helped it to run cooler and probably helped it to survive. I am not in bed with any particular laptop manufacturer but it is apparent that hp has not gotten its act together as more of their laptops seem to have this issue.

Well, I have to say, I do like HP's designs (except they need to make the power buttons bigger and router), but they can't get the concept of COOLING!

Thanks for the reply, fddizon. Those are fantastic ideas.

                It is running Windows 7.

Like Shovenose, the cpu did not repair my unit. However a reflow in the oven for about 8 minutes did. The unit is alive again but I need some suggestions on modding this gpu to make it last if possible. The heatsink was severely clogged adding to the demise of the laptop. Bad design in my opinion. Your input is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure of the exact design on the DV6 fan; but what I do on the DV9000's is.....

This is a 4 wire fan. I clip the yellow and the white wires. This leaves the red and the black wires and would make the fan run 100% all the time. So I put a 6 ohm resistor on the red wire and it runs at about 75-80%.
Where the heat sink meets the GPU I add the exact amount of copper shims needed to have it fit snug. If you add too much copper it can make the heat sink uneven for the CPU and overheat it. So the heat sink needs to fit perfectly flat on the CPU and the GPU.
I haven't had a single DV9000 come back after I started using this mod. There's 1 customer that likes to keep track of the GPU temperature. He emailed me that the GPU runs between 40's to 50's and never even hits 60C when he's doing 3D rendering. That makes me very happy
I'm not sure of the design of your heat sink and fan; but maybe you can use a modified version of what I use.

Thanks for the response Lumberjack. In the meantime; I am looking for some copper shims at the correct thickness to interface between the gpu and the heatsink as you have stated. If there is no bios mod to make the fan run most of the time i will have to implement your option which is a very good workaround. Its really sad that we have to resort to such antics to fix bad designs by manufacturers.

DV6 Pavillion here, coming up with CPU-error based on the repeated 1-blink. Swapped the CPU with no change, so I stripped out the mainboard and put it in to the reflow oven... so, in about 30 minutes I'll know if that worked or not.
