    Presario 2170 power issue

Well, here's my rookie dumb question introduction.
Compaq Presario 2170, its Korean I believe, no English. It booted, into Windows 7 when I first tried it. Found an English language pack and was going to install it, but now it won't start.
Actually, it starts, the lights come on, tho I cant see a blink code.. then shuts off, and tries to start again. The fan powers up, shuts off, and it does this over and over and won't turn off until unplugged and battery removed.
I have it apart, and have tools and a DMM, just wondering where to start.

Remove any removable ram and the hard drive and see how far it gets.
should obviously stop and report no ram /no drive.
Replace the ram (1 stick only) and try again - should report no drive
but can you get into the bios. F1 F2 delete esc or whatever?

With all the bits back no power connected remove the battery and the cmos battery press the on/off switch - leave a couple of hours - put the cmos and main battery back and try again.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

Took out the HD and ram and put back in one at a time, no change, whether battery is in or out. Fan runs about 5 secs. then restarts. Four blue lights come on, then just the power lite, then won't shut down till unplugged.
Hit the reset button, no result. The CMOS is hard to get to, could it be a problem?

yes. CMOS can be a problem it can caus problems from refusing to load BIOS with a dead CMOS battery, to of my fault the wifi not loading thanks to "android x86" damaging the wifi card configuration in CMOS.
so check the CMOS battery it shold show anywhere from 3volts to 3.3volts if it is good if not it is bad and you need to get a new CMOS battery.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Well thank you all. I took out the CPU and cleaned it. Still wouldn't start. I switched out a ram stick and boom, started right up. So twas both issues I reckon. *
Now where do these extra screws go ....*

                  Re: Presario 2170 power issue

It's back. Tried for weeks to get the OS into English but no cigar.
DBanned it, then nothing would install. XP would not copy various files.
Got Kubuntu onto it, used UBC and finally got XP on there.
Prob is, the keyboard is missing letters. E, I, and others. They just aren't responding, though a remote keyboard works fine. Been thru all the obvious CP settings, starting to wonder if it is a connection problem.
Anyone know a freeware prog that will detect and/or correct the keyboard layout?

If a usb keyboard works fine wouldn't it just be a problem with the inbuilt keyboard? They can't be repaired but can be replaced cheaply.

                      Re: Presario 2170 power issue

I read up on Compaq keyboard connection issues, the ribbon cable, but this thing had so many issues - its an asian machine, couldn't even find a language pack for it, so I thought perhaps it was just the wrong settings, the wrong layout. Can't think of a way to test that.
Been thru the HP online upgrades, no help there.
Found this machine in a gobbage can and it runs great now, after 130 updates, ceptin' for the KB issue. TX for any help in advance.

                        Re: Presario 2170 power issue

Aha, I thinks, after wiggling the cable and having a few letters return - it is the cable after all. Reattached it, firmly, and guess what? No KB OR mouse.
The connections look fine... I don't get it. Going to try another KB if I can find one.
There were three (3) screws left over when I reassembled this thing a few months back, wonder if that could affect it?
