    short circuits on mobo laptop

I am sure this has been posted upteen times, but what is the best way to check for short circuits that are not obvious. Is there a method. I hear a crayon trick? I have 2 motherboards that just kill the psu. Got no idea how to tell what's causing it without going through lots of new psu's. One is a imedia Acer media system which pops the psu and at £49 a go cannot afford it.

Get a low voltage high current bench supply with current limiting. Set it to the rated voltage and 0 current, then gradually turn up the current to a few hundred mA while feeling the board for hot/warm parts.
