Obscure Pentium laptop, sudden short?
I've purchased this weird (and might add appears to have had a fairly rough life) laptop a while ago for $1 at a yard sale. It powered up one time, (saw a POST screen!) Then, never powered again. I've since thrown it in some dark corner, BUT, I've decided to look at it again. First, this seems like a very obscure laptop, mine just has the name "BIT" on it and nothing else. Very similar (same?) can be seen here https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=54655.

UPDATE: Totally embarrassing, mods, feel free to delete this thread . Or it can be a reminder, we all make mistakes
I was using a fairly new, cheap Rosewill Arc 450w. Never occorud to try another PSU. Anyway, I tried a Bestec for fun. I got it to stay on longer. Intrigued, I got a Newton Power, same deal as the Bestec. Neither had a 24 pin connector, however. Both were 24 pin.
So, I dug out my trusty (was being used somewhere else) Lite On PS-5301. It fired right up and posted!
At least I got a new VRM

Is this Asus A8S dead?
When I attempt to power the board, the CPU fan spins for a second, then nothing. If I try to power it in again, nothing will happen until I unplug the PSU and replug. I only have a green standby LED. I've tried basic stuff, different RAM, even different CPU. But still nothing. However, I removed the CMOS battery and it did stay on, but I had no GPU or POST card installed so I don't know if it actually worked. Attempted more combinations of removing and reinserting the CMOS battery, to no avail, I'm assuming it was a coincidence. Also tried putting pressure on the CPU, and the finger test, nothing...

Re: How would you test after recapping a VRM?
I believe it, read a lot about that. Hopefully these oscons hold up, especially now I threw a Prescott in there, mainly for SSE3 support.
I've also got a GX260 that had 2 swollen HMs.

Re: How would you test after recapping a VRM?
Perfect, thanks momaka! I learned I have a normal Pentium 4 and as luck would have it, I found another junk motherboard , this one has 820uf Sanyo polymers on the VRM. I'll probably end up throwing those ones in.

How would you test after recapping a VRM?
Hi badcaps! Recently aquired an optiplex gx270 for $10. It was bad, it wouldn't even power on , it just flashed an amber LED and immediatly powered off. So I cracked it open and found 10 bad caps, 9 on the VRM one for the northbridge. All were Ruby MCZs. Now, I wasn't certain the caps were going to fix the issue and didn't wanna spend money on new caps, only for that to not work (again). So, I salvged some little yellow Fujitsu caps from another 478 board and I salvaged some KZGs from a newer HP board. (I know KZG, but they were free) So I now have 3 Fujitsu, and 6 KZGs, I ran Y-cruncher for...

Now I'm really confused , how is there frequency if it's DC?...

Re: Ultra low ESR. Much confusion!
Well, sorry for being late but update , the repair is finally completed! I've actually used a Würth polymer , my friend actually had a few left over from a project and let me have one. And now it's running beautifuly. I'm typing on it now, in fact. I've experimented with different operating systems, and so far settled on an alternative os that's very fast even on the 15 year old IDE drive. Now a got a nice pc for my shed, Yes I'm pretty impressed with how well this thing can multitask and how fast it is overall. Plus I get access to legacy ports...

Re: Ultra low ESR. Much confusion!
Intersting, thanks for the data sheet link! Yes I unfortunately learned about ultra low esr after I purchased the zlh and I've seen a number of fakes on ebay, though I only get caps from mouser. But, I'm not sure I trust this $9 meter, I'll upload some images of it and the cap in question. Also the measurements of the fjs cap and a ZLH cap, also the location on the board.
Oh and thanks for the link momaka, very informative!! Not sure why, but I love this old core 2 duo and I want to keep her alive....Last edited by keldeo; 09-03-2022, 07:37 PM.

Re: Ultra low ESR. Much confusion!
I see, thanks for the datasheet. I wasn't sure if the fj was the same as the fjs. For some reason, I thought 0.24 was low, because, if the meter Is correct (esr01) it's the same resistance as the Rubycons. I have a few other new caps I didn't test.
Also I'll be honest, I'm still fairly new at capacitors, and not sure how to find leakage. The caps I bought from mouser were the zlh series from Rubicon and bought them specifically for this cap I damaged on this board, but didn't discover the "ultra low ESR" until they were already...

Ultra low ESR. Much confusion!
Hi badcaps! So recently, me being a butterfingers, resulted in me dropping a graphics card and having the corner land directly onto a capacitor directly above the pcie slot on my Asus p5gc 775 board. Now this caused a pretty decent dent in the top of the can, so I've decided it'd ve best to replace it. However, I've ran into an issue. The current caps are Panasonic FJS, 820μf 6.3v. These are apparently "ultra low ESR" and these aren't manufactured anymore. So it seems I'm left with a few options. Put the dented cap back in, apparently it's ESR is 0.24 ohms, but the capacitance is...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hello! I'm from Altoona PA. I came across this site when researching about electronic repair. I've noticed we live in a throw away society and I want to help change that! I'm also very new to soldering and any electrical work and hope to improve.
