    ASUS FX504GM not turning ON

Hello everyone...i will start a series of posts with laptops that are my nightmares .

This time i have a laptop ASUS FX504GM after burned mosfets in the CPU power supply section.

    Laptop motherboard model : DABKLIMBAB0 REV. B

    CPU : i7-8750H
    GPU : GTX 1060

Laptop history : Laptop has burned mosfets (including hole in the motherboard) near the CPU.
    The burned mosfets were exactly : PQ94, PQ95, PQ96

After few hours of work ( restoring pads, connections, and removing shorts ) finally i have tested motherboard...and the laptop came back to life ...almost.

Laptop was turning on with and without battery, he was charging the battery and it was possible to enter to the BIOS, he was theoretically working fine but...

After testing further there was no possibility to startup windows from any hard drive ( fresh installation, and windows already installed on different drive ). It was stuck at black screen and nothing was loading .

Here comes the best part: I was thinking that maybe there is something with the BIOS so i have reprogrammed the BIOS with the one from one of the posts in forum with the SVOD programmer externally and not by using in-curcuit adapter.

And the laptop has died , i mean : it is not powering on after i have soldered back the BIOS chip which was reprogrammed, and even the old backup of the BIOS makes no difference.

I have also soldered fresh new KBC IT8987E-BXA and also i have changed/ soldered the BIOS chip itself to the new one programmed with the backup BIOS file.

Laptop is still not turning on

    Symptoms are as desribed below:

Laptop is not powering on ( it is acting like it was somewhere a short curcuit but i have not noticed that anywhere on the motherboard ), i hear a click of the power supply i guess on the montherboard which i guess is trying to startup but it is not starting. The fans are very slightly trying to move but they are not spinning ( there is just a very tiny move after i press the power button ) and on power supply i got for a very short time a jump into 0,4xxA or 0,5xxA current draw and it is dropping into almost 0

    Almost because :

What is strange that after the battery is disconnected tha laptop takes from 0.003 to 0.008 that values are jumping (0.004A-0.007A...after few seconds 0.003A into 0.008A after few seconds 0.005A into 0.007A )

The laptop is charging the battery fine because i see that after power cable is connected the charging LED status indicates charging and on power supply i have a 1,760A current draw.

I have also noticed on thermal camera that after i press button i hear that click sound and the PCH and coil above him it is getting hot for a very short period like 0,5 second

Does it really mean what i suspect ? That in some miracolous way the PCH was damaged by the BIOS file from the forum ?

That laptop is a real nightmare

If someone have any idea or a tip i will be very grateful.

I am attaching a schematic and boardview in case someone will take a look...and the hole of the motherboard which was restored ( it was a nightmare restoring that pcb with layers, pads and connections )

Re: ASUS FX504GM not turning ON

After a failed high-side related to the CPU there is usually no point to continue at all, since the CPU per 99% does not survive that. I had to learn this the hard way too.

The possible PCH issue in addition might be just a "secondary" issue after all this stress caused by the burned tracks or the futile try to get some life out of it after all this happened.

    Dismissed. Next board please...

Re: ASUS FX504GM not turning ON

Thank You for the answer but i have fixed few laptops after high side mosfet failure but also i do agree that in most cases that is fried CPU.

But that specific asus worked fine and was turning on every single time, for the whole day. The issue of that strange short occured after reprogramming BIOS so the PCH could be damaged by the BIOS which is first case in my life. I have a limitations in electronic related repairs but i know how to solder things...so replacing CPU or PCH will be no problem if that will be the case.

That board will come to life...You will see There is too much electro waste on our planet .

        Hello,
I am probably in the same situation as you were before..
Fixed high side mofset in my ASUS GX531GW, now it all working fine except booting the system, Asus \ Windows loading wheel after half spin just freeze. grub is the only thing I have manage to run.

        Did you manage any fix?

Please check the GPU again. Or try replacing the MOSFETs with different ones, as the replacement MOSFETs may not be suitable. Some of them are N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs.

[TUTORIAL] fix asus bios with bios from asus web support (by razor_amd)
              by razor_amd
With ASUS, not everything is quite so simple. I will show you my way. It may be longer or harder but it is the right way to do it in my humble opinion.

For example, you can have 3 similar ASUS motherboards, all being the same model, all of which will have different BIOS versions.

I will give you an example and my version of preparing BIOS from ASUS website and in the process I am always cleaning Intel ME while doing it so you have fully cleaned BIOS, no DMI data, no password, nothing.

This is the picture of 3 similar ASUS motherboards, all of them being X555LD...

HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec2523nd - Dimm2 slot disabled after corrupt bios repair? Advice requested.
              by Bloodhoundje
              Hi everyone,

I have been doing hardware repair as a hobby for some years now and recently decided to learn about repairing laptops as a fun challenge.

I managed to get my hands on a "HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec2523nd" notebook that only shows a white power LED and doesnt respond to anything.

After initial testing I concluded the bios seems to be corrupted since all voltages are normal and there are no shorts. HP has a feature for a bios restore from USB with winkey+B for this model. This did not work.

I have desoldered the bios chip (GigaDevice...

ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI - BIOS Help
              by grimacelord
              Hello,

I have spent the last hour on this and I guess this is just over my head, so here I am.

I have an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard here that needs to have the BIOS updated in order to accept the latest CPUs.

The BIOS chips seem to come as a set of two: GD25B64ESIG and GD25B128ESIG. My guess is one of them is a fail-safe for the main BIOS? I really don't know. Or one of them is ME and other is BIOS? I don't know.

Anyway, I took dumps of both chips and then downloaded the latest update for this motherboard from ASUS's website...

ASUS ROG Ally X - (Handheld Gaming PC)
              Model No: RC72LA
              Serial No: SBNVKD001014459

Hi all, I've spent the past week digging through the forums and guides to try correct my foolish mistake of changing hidden settings while tinkering around, and to be honest my heads overloaded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

I used a tool called 'Smokeless-UMAF' to access usually hidden settings in the bios. I tweaked one or two 'safe' things but made the mistake of tweaking a lot of settings under 'USB/Thunderbolt Configurations' when I didn't know what they did. For...
