DV6000 GPU reflow issue

Hi guys -

I have today recieved a DV6000 (Intel chipset) with the infamous Power but no video signal...
We usually have these in our workshop and for the most part, do the basic tests such as CPU/RAM checks cables external monitor etc... if none of these work then we assume its a GPU reflow which normally works and we have machine up and running in no time, We have 2 infrared machines, one of them uses a Preheater and Upperheater and one is an IR oven.

On this particular machine we reflowed the chip and semi assembled the machine into a bootable state, the machine powered on but we only recieved a white screen, with thin white lines running down vertically... we susppected a bad reflow and tried again, but the same result...

There is no signal on external, even when switched with Fn/F4 on keyboard, but there does appear to be post and hard drive activity.

We have tried a known working LCD and cable in the system and have had the same result with no progress.

the next step for us is to consider a reball on the GPU which we can do, but before we do, do any of you folks have any suggestions before we lift the GPU? any other tests or tricks we can try to fix this situation?...

Tools wise, i dont currently have a scope, only a decent DMM and Analogue MM.

Nvidia chip. Fault could be internal to chip (manufacturing flaw) and not fixable by reballing which would fix a failure in the board assembly process. The blame game has been played between the 2 for a while now.

thanks for the help - i have reflowed the motherboard completely in my IR oven and to no avail....

looks like its a beyond economical repair system in this case as i dont have any spare GPU's sitting around for this

usually, beyond this reflow thing the motherboard is beyond reasonable repair. Might as well gut it for parts.

As Quasar stated, reflowing doesn't always fix nVidia chips, and most reflowed nVidia chips after the FX series until the 9xxx series will fail again even after reflow.

Hi. I got same problem with DV6000, I do reball, and no help, I must say this dv6000 hp or Compaq series is one big pain in the ass. I think is not bad BGA, but is some thing around power part, maybe mosfet but Im not 100% I got 5 of this motherboards diferent types, Intel and AMD, with nvidia and intel gpu chips and all got same problem power up but no video on LCD and external monitor. So has anyone been able to fix this motherboard ?

DV6000 is crap hell, just toss in trash, they no fix, not worth trouble. (my best world speak)

I reflowed a DV6000 a few days ago...

The symptom was when the laptop was turned on, the power lights flashed briefly and then turned off.

Result after high temp rohs reflow: Same thing.

If you're going to go to the length of reballing, buy a brand new chip... That will almost certainly guarantee a partial success (Partial in the sense that the new chip might also fail).

It will fail for sure..Heatsink's design is so bad it is a matter of time before it fails again..

I fix this sucker. I reball all 3 chip's and laptop work OK. Before reball all 3 chip's has overheated, after the temp is normal. I do 24h video test, use BS player and set playlist, in 24h no overheated or freez or any other defect.

So I think I fix this crap.

I am having this same issue I am going to replace the main board after another shot at it but I almost wonder I had a laptop like this with the CMOS battery so I'm going to give that a shot as well as another processor cause I used a processor I wasn't sure if it was a good one or not ... I'll post results if I remember I have lots of projects but info gathering is nice.
