How much current was consumed?

Is the CPU with a heat sink?

I used a DC step down converter for this so i could only see voltage but the amps that it outputs is 1A. And no i removed the heatsink, the cpu didn’t get hot. I don’t have a bench power supply with me for the moment so i will have to wait until next week. Is there any other way to find the short?

You will need higher current to heat up the shorted part. We use a product called Short Killer 30A (available on AliExpress). It pulses out a preset voltage at 30 amps. We often select 0v8 for the voltage. This is ample to crack open shorted capacitors.

Wait till you have an adjustable power supply.

What is better to check for shorts or for voltage injection, a switching powersupply or linear?

It does not matter. Switching will be smaller, light weight, more efficient from heat generation and cheaper.

Hi, i got my bench powersupply now and tried injecting 1v and 1A where the short is but didn’t notice anything getting hot. I can see that it was only drawing 300-450ma when injecting.

The readings of the device may not be accurate, does it show 1A consumption if you short-circuit the two probes?

Hello,
Vesko356 is right.
You should first try to short circuit your probes to be sure the voltage is falling and your current consumption is almost 1A.
Then inject again the 1V/1A to the board.

Do you have isopropyl alcohol?
If yes, you can put it on the suspected parts and check which part is getting hot by evaporation.

Yes it shows 1A when shorting probes. I found the problem on my laptop, it took some time to find out but i found a video of someone having the same issue with a asus gaming laptop and it was a mosfet that was shorted. I remember that my laptop adapter was only outputting 0.40v when plugging it in the motherboard because of a short. So i decided to inject 19v in the charger port with my bench powersupply and slowly increase the current and the mosfet on the right side was getting hot. The short is gone after desoldering it. Both mosfets are the TPCA 8059-H so i will replace them both. I already ordered the mosfets but i have to wait for about 10 days for it to arrive.. i will keep you posted when i got it.

Yes it shows 1A when shorting probes. Don't inject 19V like this in the future, or you'll kill some chip. If you have shorted high side mosfet for example. And most probably you're wrong with your conclusion about the fault.
Or the initial measurements you reported were incorrect.
