    TUF505DT : No charge

    Good morning,

I currently have an Asus TUF505DT PC that refuses to charge the batteries.
I have 3 different batteries, two of which come from Asus Accessories and are official, but nothing works.

The PC starts fine on mains or on battery.

If I connect the charger, the battery remains at its level but does not charge.
So I searched and finally found the battery management component which seems to be: bq24780S .

I changed this famous component without more result. I don't understand where the problem could come from...
Do you have any leads please?

    Thank you.
    Good day

Measure below mentioned pins of BQ247780s charging IC:
    01.ACP
    02.ACN
    03.CMSRC
    04.ACDRV
    05ACOK
    06.ACDET
    07.VCC
    08.REGN

Measure voltage on pin1/4/8 of dc-in mosfets(there will be two mosfets).

      Re: TUF505DT : No charge

      Hi,

      Thank you.

      Here are the measures :

      01.ACP 19.41V
      02.ACN 20.23V
      03.CMSRC 20.02V
      04.ACDRV 25.30V
      05ACOK 3.141V
      06.ACDET 2.741V
      07.VCC 3.197V
      08.REGN 0.015V

The mosfet seems to have 10V approx on 1 and 0 on 4 and 8.

        Re: TUF505DT : No charge

Confirm the voltage on the VCC pin. Confirm it is truly the VCC pin on this device.

The VCC value is too low. Often there will be 3 pin dual diode that powers the VCC pin.

Search for it and then check the voltage to ground of each pin on this diode.

Suspecting that the diode is defective. This is resulting in the wrong voltage for REGN and ACDRV pins.

Update...think you are checking a different pin. ACDRV is ok. REGN pin should be 6v since ACDRV is ok.

Ok. So if i follow the datasheet, it's different :

            01 :ACN : 20.23V
            02 : ACP : 19.41V
            03 : CMSRC :20.02V
            04 : ACDRV : 25.30V
            05 : ACOK : 3.141V
            06 : ACDET : 2.741V
            07 : VCC: 19.90V
            08 : REGN : 6.029V

            SOrry for my error...

              Re: TUF505DT : No charge

Much better. It will be a good idea to also post the pin # that you are measuring for others to review. This list is all good.

If the logic board is not charging, the fault may be a detection one of the battery.

Continue to measure the other pins on this charger IC for a review.

Specifically, interested in the SDA & SCL pins on this charger IC but list each.

Then, measure the voltage to ground of each pin on the battery connector. The SDA & SCL pins will also be present on this connector.

These interface pins should be ~3v3 for each (SDA & SCL) if all is ok.

                  Re: TUF505DT : No charge

The voltage values look good for most of the charger pins except for HIDRV pin #26.

Does the laptop function with the pre-charged battery pack? (without the power adapter)

The gate voltage is almost the same as the battery voltage so suspecting that the high side charging mosfet is leaking.

Being a N-channel mosfet, the GATE voltage (HIDRV pin) must be HIGHER than the voltage being passed between source / drain pins to enable. At the same voltage as the input (19v), the mosfet will remain off.

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.

Measure the resistance across the high side mosfet pins as follows:

                  source (1-2-3) & drain (5-6-7-8)
                  source (1-2-3) & gate (4)
                  gate (4) & drain (5-6-7-8)

Post each measurement. If there is a low reading, the mosfet is defective and needs to be replaced.

Yes, the laptop start with battery pack only.
When you talk about mosfet, it's the twice near the BQ , right ?

                      Re: TUF505DT : No charge

Can you post a pic of the area?

Yes, the HIDRV pin should be linked to this mosfet.

Then LODRV pin will be linked to the low side mosfet.

The 2 of these mosfets toggle ON / OFF to dial down the high input voltage of 19v.

The PCB trace should be simple to follow -> perhaps a resistor between the charger pin and the mosfet.

Also, the PHASE pin will have an inductor to monitor the final voltage for the battery charging.

If I am following the pcb layout correctly, the high side and low side charging mosfets are the ones above and to the left of the inductor with the 3R3 marking.

The mosfet above the 3R3 inductor appears to be the high side mosfet.

Remove all power and check the resistance of these mosfets.

                          From my understanding,

Left mosfet = low side charging mosfet
Top mosfet = high side charging mosfet
                          Right mosfet = battery mosfet

                            Hi ,
                            How are you ?

If I take the measurement on the Mosfet, the resistance value never fixes. I don't understand how I should measure reliably?
Do you have a method for that?
There, I get values that start from 0.5MOHM and go down to 250K between S and D for example, but it moves all the time.
                            THANKS

That is ok. More concerned with lower resistance values than this one. Just note the approximate range.

Continue to check the other pins and mosfets.

                                Here are the measurements:

                                source (1-2-3) & drain (5-6-7-8)

                                Left : 8.36K
                                Top : 8.44K
                                Right : 8.46K

                                source (1-2-3) & gate (4)

                                Left :65K
                                Top : OL
                                Right : OL

                                gate (4) & drain (5-6-7-8)[/B]

                                Left : 160K
                                Top : OL
                                Right : OL

Maybe the left is burned ?

                                Thank you

They each look low but remove mosfet to the left.

Then test the removed mosfet when it is on your work table.

Also measure the resistance again of the top and right mosfets while the left mosfet is removed.

                                  Post the measurements.

Does the board recognize the charge level of the batteries correct or do you have a random value like 0% or 255% shown in the task bar?

The level seems to be ok. Actually, i have 11% with a battery at 10.65V.

I see something strange i think : if i test the resistance between SRP and SRN, i must have 10 ohm or actually, i have 0. Is it normal ?

                                          Hi friends of electronics

What you see in the video and pictures attached is the circuit for charging the batteries of a DC motor.

The problem is that this circuit cannot charge the batteries (3 1800mAH NiMH batteries) any more. When the circuit was OK, its green LEDs lit up one at a time to show that the batteries have charged more. But now that the circuit is flawed, LEDs light up as you see in the video and at the same time successive beeps are heard.

Please help me fix this circuit.

hello, i have been sitting on some microsoft surface pro 4 tablets for a while now. i was originally tasked with replacing the battery in one of the tablets, and ended breaking the screen and logic board in the process. decided to buy another tablet with the same specs. got that screen off successfully of the second tablet. the logic board appeared good, but i guess i shorted something out in the installation process of the logic which i've read is a common issue if there is no barrier between the logic board and battery pins. all that said, i ate costs of the repair and have...

I got four replacement batteries for these HP laptops about a year ago. The originals would not charge, and these replacements have now gone the same way.

I'm not sure what the expected life of a laptop battery is but I woud have thought they would last longer than that

I now need to order four more batteries. Possibly these replacement ones were now good? The owner does not mind paying a bit more for originals or good compatible batteries that last longer

The top one is the original

                                          Any ideas?
                                          Cheers...

                                          Hello,
it's not a laptop/desktop related question but I figured that someone here will have the right knowledge.
At work we use a few Aldebaran(now Softbank/United Robotics group) Nao Robots which they use some custom 6S li-on battery packs.
Nao robots tends to draw from the battery even if they are shut down, and the BMS tends to be a little aggresive, if the pack stays on a turned off robot for 3 months it's gonna lock and will refuse to charge.

Now, I have noticed a few things.
The "dead" battery, while connected to charger and NOT Charging will...

Order my parts from mobilesentrix.com and iPhone batteries have been excellent. Recently got 3x bad A1534 (2015) batteries. All would work until ~30-40+% and drop to < 10% instantly. Typical sign of cheap batteries.

Perhaps the less popular A1534 model's aftermarket batteries are more source limited. Just find it surprising quality from mobilesentrix (usually fairly high quality aftermarket parts) have been so poor.

BTW, this isn't the only defective parts I've had from mobilesentrix. Amongst others including iPad Air touch screen and A1989 touch bar (display was...
