    laptop video card

I have a friend with an Asus laptop. He says the video card (ATI Mobility Radeon X1700) is broken. I did some searching and found a similar model on ebay that looks like this:

It this a standardized connector interface (the particular edge card connector) for laptop video cards? If so what is it called and can other cards be substituted in? Does nvidia make cards for this interface also?

The interface is called MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module), but there are a couple of revisions of it that are not backwards compatible. I'm afraid I don't know much about it to be helpful... hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thanks for the info. I did some more searching and found this site with lots of details:

          http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Tech_13.html

And from the looks of this: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/C90s.html it seems to be a fairly involved process to replace a MXM card, assuming of course you can find the right one!

            Re: laptop video card

MXM is compatible-ish it a real pain to find a card that will work.

I encountered a laptop with bad graphics before so I:
            1. Removed the mobo
            2. Took off all plastics/components I could from the board
            3. Preheated my oven to 195 C
            4. Rolled up 4 aluminium foil balls
            5. Put the balls on a tray
            6. Placed the mobo on the balls
            7. Put the tray/mobo in the oven
            8. After 6 mins I turned the oven off and left it open to cool

I hooked in the power and it worked, one of the USB ports was a little funky (it went to usb 1.1 mode intermittently). That laptop is still working to this day (about 1 1/2 years).

This fixed the broken solder on that mobo/Chip.
It worked for me but if you are to do this its at your own risk! (I take no responsibility for your actions).

I hope your repairs go well

(but seriously google 'oven motherboard' and 'oven graphics card')

The oven trick worked fine for me too, just that it was 210C and 7 mins here, just to be sure. :p 2 laptop boards, one desktop motherboard (of course REMOVE ALL LYTICS BEFOREHAND or you'll have popcorn), and one cellphone board fixed so far.
