WD 1TB WD10SPZX HDD clicking non responsive

So ive picked up a nice little All in one C22 acer aspire with a broken screen, i was pretty happy when i found a little 2.5" notbook 1tb drive in there.

So ive thrown it into my PC and started copying all my data over to it and about 70gb in it starts clicking and become unresponsive. This is about the 3rd time this has happened to me and ive never been able to fix hard disks like this. Ive ended up keeping them in a pile.

what actually causes this? is there anything that can be done about it?

Caused by bad sectors or physical damage on the platter, like when the head(s) have touched the surface. The drives error correction SMART doesn`t always clear a bad sector, you can try to low level format the drive ,or use software to try and fix the bad sectors, such as hdd regenerator - free, spinrite (commercial software). Check the health of the drive using software too, such as HD sentinel,Victoria,or WD`s own Data Lifeguard Diagnostic .

Awesome, Ive just undid the screws and took the cover off and the heads were back home where they should be, so i put the cover back on and its working again, i should probably go over the bad sector and get it removed

You removed the cover of the hard drive? Yeah, uh, even if it works now, that drive is trash, regardless of the previous issue with it.

Do you know what these orange coloured blocks are? im assuming that its during this area that the problem happened?

Ran through it with Regen and it was fine, no bad sectors at all. very strange probably just gonna use the outer tracks for now. see if its okay

Don't buy into the bad sector "repair" bullshit. You can't save an HDD that's dying.
If there are sectors that are not readable because they are too weak (or the head is), the HDD will try to read them until it succeeds and reallocate them. If you write over them and it writes/reads back successfully then the HDD will think the sector is actually good and won't try to reallocate it (of course it depends on the behaviour of the firmware but I've seen it happen enough times).
Sectors being hard (or impossible) to read means data loss. Once you get to that point it can only get worse.

If you write over them and it writes/reads back successfully then the HDD will think the sector is actually good and won't try to reallocate it (of course it depends on the behaviour of the firmware but I've seen it happen enough times).

There are edge cases where a drive just won`t reallocate a bad sector.If the data thats on the drive is important then professional recovery services should always be used,rather than messing around with "repair" software.Theres no harm though using such software on a drive like this one to try and get some use out of it,i`d never use it to install an OS on or store any important files.I`m surprised its working at all after taking the cover off. .He can add it to the pile when it dies, or turn it into something useful https://www.google.com/search?q=Hard+drive+clock

I agree. The OP`s drive is in bad shape but with others in less bad shape,i mean the ones where youve had to run chkdsk quite a few times (how many ?) or ones with,say half/two thirds/whatever percentage you feel is unreliable spare sectors left,or SMART reports diminished drive health they can/could still be useful for a while until they get in worse shape or die.All you need to do is label the drive,or write on with marker pen "NO OS" , "SCRATCH" or some other name so that you don`t forget,and put it in a caddy,oh and mark the caddy with a label too !

Exactly. Even if somehow this drive starts working fine again, it won't be for long. And of course it'll be an inconvenient time that will result in lost data, heartbreak, and sadness.
