    Ti4800se 2 caps blew

I've tried browsing the posts but I didn't really find any help, maybe I missed something...

I've found some replacement Nichicon caps to get from the links posted in the faqs but I'm not sure what ones I need for my vid card. There are so many options, lead and lead free, low impedence, compliant, blah blah. It's giving me a headache. The ones on the card are silver in color, approx 7x12mm, and have the markings 470 10v R1 with a cross scored on the top for exploding. How am I supposed to know what kind I need(in regards to the varieties of lead/compliant/low imedence)? Any help is greatly appreciated. =D

    post a pic.
    you want low esr/impedence
if they are silver they are likely smt too.
i often use the panasonic fc series since i have them.gotta get creative to mount them in place of the tiny smt parts though.

lead/lead free doesnt matter unless you are doing lead free soldering. either is ok otherwise

Ok thank you for the advice. Here is a pic, but it's kinda blurry since my digital camera sux monkey balls.

The two black tipped ones on the right are the ones that blew.

too blurry to tell what they are.
since that camera dont do closeups try placing the card on a flatbed scanner.
          are those smt or thruhole?

you are too close to focus for that camera. step back and use the zoom

            they look like thru hole

I have tried that, I just couldn't get it to focus. Yes they are thru-hole.

                Re: Ti4800se 2 caps blew

ok so you need some low esr 470uf10v caps. The most popular caps used on the forum are Rubycon MBZ, ZL / Panasonic FC / Nichicon PW, PM, and PL which are great for graphics cards, motherboards, power supplies etc. If you dont find 7mm width caps then you might have to be creative about the positioning, like bending the leads of a cap and having it flat on the board or tilted because of the close positioning of other near caps.

here is also a not completely comprehensive list. If you choose one of these let me double check.

Nichicon - PM, PW, HV, HD, HC, HE, HM, HN HZ (we do not recommend using HM or HN series presently due to early fails of those series.)

Nippon Chemicon - NRSZ, NRSX, NRSY, NRSJ, NRSG

                NRSX is probably the best

                United Chemi-con - KZE, KZH

KZE are used on many boards recently.

Panasonic - FC, FM, FK, FA

Panasonic FC are highly available and recommended.

Rubycon - MBZ, MCZ, ZL, ZLG ZLH, ZA, YXH, YXG

                  Re: Ti4800se 2 caps blew

the black caps as willawake mentioned are 470uf the fc series panasonics will replace that nicely as those are what ive been useing on the nforce4 boards Ive been doing.

the panasonic part number for the 10v 470 fc series is eeu-fc1a471 and its 8mm x 11.5mm so it will replace those nicely.

The green caps on your board are 6.3v 1000uf and panasonic makes a 10v 1000uf that is 8mm x 20mm eeu-fc1a102L and will replace yours nicely as long as you lay them down or dont plan on running a pci card in your first slot (you shouldnt be anyway) you can install them standing up.

I am partial to the panasonic's I have had very good luck with them and they also happen to be easily available in the U.S. through digiKey.com they have a phone number too

Video cards seem to be a little different than motherboards in that most of the failures ive seen with these metal can caps seem to be Heat related as in the caps blow sometime around the time your fan finaly dies.. Im running about 50% on my video card recaps about half of them suffer dammage to the GPU from the dead fan.

you can see some better photos in my post of a 4200 here:

and Ill add some after photos to that topic as soon as i get time to take pictures .. now that ive recaped three of them!

                    Re: Ti4800se 2 caps blew

With Nichicon, PM is the lead-free version of the PL series. I'm not sure whether the Panasonic/Matsushita FA or FK series are available anymore. FC and FM are current, FM being lower impedance. The Rubycon ZLH series is new, lower impedance than the ZL. I'm going to post links to Nichicon's, Panasonic's, Rubycon's, and UCC's catalogs on the FAQ forum. One thing to look for in those catalogs is the diagrams showing the various series in relationship to each other, focusing on rated impedance, size, and rated life.
