    Question about video card recapping

I have a friend who broke a capacitor off of a video card. He tried to solder it back on but got the polarity reversed, but we had already powered on the card before we realized that. No visible signs of damage. Is is possible that the the whole graphics board is fried, so that it is not worth it to replace the cap?
It is an expensive graphics card to replace.

Usually one reversed cap is not enough to do permanent damage to the core / memory chips, especially when it was powered only for a short interval. You should just replace it with a good equivalent capacitor from a trusted brand.

      I agree with Leopard.
You did not run power backwards through anything except the cap.
Cap is probably the only thing that got hurt.

Thanks for the responses everyone. That's relieving to hear. The card in question is a 9800 GX2, and the capacitor is a Sanyo OS-CON 16v 180uF from the SVP series, surface mount type as outlined here:

I checked the North American distributers sites as provided in the FAQ, but they didn't seem to carry the Sanyo OS-CON series.

So I looked on ebay for a while, and I the closest thing I came around was a Sanyo OS-CON 16v 180uF from SEP series. According to Sanyo: it has the same specs, but has leads instead of the surface mount.

There is a 16v cap from the SVP series, but it is 330uF. And there is good availability of 16v 270uF caps on ebay. is 330uF-270uF too high?

Also, I know that badcaps.net repair service is for motherboards, but do I have the option to send in the graphics card to them? I am not sure of my soldering skills, since this would be my first time soldering a cap.
