Re: FIC VA-503+ best replacement for Vcore caps

    Hi all,

I stumbled onto this thread and am dealing with a VA-503+ recap, myself. I went onto mouser.com / digikey.com to find suitable caps and realized I needed the ESR. To that end, I recently discovered / bought an LCR-T4 Mega328 which seems to do reasonably well with ESR measurements.

Long story short, I popped off the caps from the board that looked good and measured them as follows. (Please note: these are my measurements of capacitors which are old, unknown whether the caps are completely out of spec & unknown whether my measurement device is accurate. In other words, caveat emptor!)

    Code:
    Farads Voltage ESR VLoss
    1500uF 6.3V 0.34Ω 4.4%
    1000uF 10V 0.37Ω 2.9%
    10uF 25V 6.2Ω 4.3%
In addition, I measured the physical dimensions of the caps as follows:

Capacitance: width (mm) x height (mm), lead spacing (mm)
    1500uF: 8 x 16, 3.5
    1000uF: 8 x 12, 3.5
    10uF: 4 x 8, 2.5

All caps are 105C rated on my board.

    On my board I have 8 x 1500uF caps, 4 x 1000uF caps and 22 x 10uF caps.

Hopefully this well help the next person looking to recap a VA=503+. I'm going to look for capacitors now...

For your information those readings mean that those capacitors are bad.
Even the "entry level" low ESR capacitors would have ESR almost 10 times lower than that...
And the Vloss percentage should ideally be under 1%

P.S: Have you done the calibration of the meter? It is done by shorting all 3 pins at power on and then following the on screen instructions.
You may want to read up on it first because depending on what firmware it has it may ask for a 100nF and a 1000nF film cap for the calibration.

This is great information. Thank you. I'm going to try as you suggest.

One note: All but one of the small electrolytic capacitors are 10uF/25V. One of them is 22uF/16V.

I replaced all the large capacitors on my VA-503+ board and it still would not POST. After replacing all the 10uF & the single 22uF capacitor, it comes right up. Success!

Hp Lh482p 5 short 3 long short after cpu vcore mosfet replacement
            by jm942
            Hi,
My laptop went dead and after checking ,the main 19 volt power rail was shorted. After some checks i could identify that a high side vcore mosfet was shorted.
I replaced the mosfet and now the white powerled is present , fans start spinning but capslock shows the famous 5 long and 3 short code.

I checked the vcore voltages after replacement and i get for all 1.01 V so means for me that the driver is still working of the replaced shorted mosfet. On the Nvidia i measure around 0.8 V after the mosfets.
I did voltage injection on the cpu with 0.7V and i have a current...

Apple 820-3662 VCore shorted to ground.

            Hi, Would appreciate some help.
I have an Apple Late 2013 15" A1398 MacBook Pro with Logic Board 820-3662.
Get charger light but no fan spin or chime. No liquid damage.
Found PPBUS and VCORE both shorted to ground. Other rails were ok.
Removed VCORE MOSFETS U7310, U7320 and U7330. Found U7330 was in fact shorted.
With the 3 MOSFETS removed, get PPBUS and fan spin. VCORE is still hard shorted to ground (0 ohms).
Attempted voltage insertion on VCORE to locate short using bench supply set at 1.0 VDC and 4.95 Amps (max current for my...

            MSI K7T266 Pro (Ver. 1.0)
            by ssl6
            Hey Everyone,

Long time lurker, but I think this is my first time posting.

Just looking for some assistance on identifying some suitable replacement capacitors for an MSI K7T266 Pro (Ver. 1.0). I just got my hands on two of them actually, both working but one has some visibly bulging capacitors and the other has a few that I can't tell for sure if they're bulging because it's faint at best if they are.

I'll be honest I don't fully understand much on capacitor spec sheets beyond voltage and capacitance but I can solder like nobodies business so I've...

Macbook Air M2 A2681 Kernel panics after screen replacement
            by reformatt
Just had a customer bring in a M2 MBA A2681 that had had a screen replacement in April at another repairer. Since then, she has been getting intermittent kernel panics. It's an aftermarket screen, and of course it fails in diagnostics as the calibration hasn't been done. The error in the panic log is "No device added after powering on the rails".

It seems the original repairer has swapped the board and the screen to other MAC's, and said that it isn't a screen issue. From what I understand, by doing a quick search on Google, this is in fact a screen issue. The panic relates...

CPU vcore missing in HP workstation Z2 Mini 4G
            by Francisco.s
Hi, have a HP workstation Z2 Mini 4G for repair with CPU vcore missing.

The resistance at the output of CPU vcore coils, is less than one ohm so I think CPU could be damaged, but no mosfet are damaged.
It mounts an i7 8th gen, and have only i5 7th gen for test, but I think it is not compatible.

Without CPU in the socket there is no short, but there is no vcore voltag, and it emits a beep like no detecting ram.

The controller chip for cpu vcore is a MP2949A, and has no enable voltage at pin 37.

I wonder which circuit generates this enable...
