    Need a bit of direction

I'm replacing caps on a video card. Each spot for the eight I need to replace has one side marked by a white (nearly) half circle. I'm thinking they indicate polarity but can't tell if it would be indicating the positive or the negative pole.
Is there some standard for these marks or must I find specifics about the board itself?
The new caps have a gold band on one side with an outline of a rectangle which would seem to indicate negative but I'm only guessing.
    See the attached pic.
If you can't tell this is my first attempt at replacing bad caps.

Opps, sorry I had to edit that.

The white marking (half circle) on the pcb board usually indicates negative pole (I just found a motherboard with the opposite that's the reason for the edit.)
You are right about the capacitors, the gold marking side is negative, you can see small minus signs on them.

Before you remove caps, it's good practice just to take a look of the polarity before removing them.

      Bar indicates negative side.
Some manufacturers however (Asus and Asrock for example) use bar for positive side. Check once for every board, the layout should be consistent on a board.

On that board, the silkscreen is a bit weird because they overlayed two silkscreens, just in case they were going to switch from one capacitor brand to another that had different diameter.

Note that in the corner, that's no capacitor footprint, that's a footprint for an inductor, that's why there's no white silkscreen bar. Don't have to fill that space and the two capacitor spaces anyway, seems to be a whole dc-dc converter optional there.

Re: Need a bit of direction

        Thanks for the reply guys.
Truth is, I didn't even think about polarity until I was beginning to replace the bad caps.
@Mariushm I wouldn't know a capacitor footprint from a hole in the ground. LOL
Anyway, I've got them in place and tomorrow I'll get the card installed and see how I've done.

        Thanks for the help/advice.

HANNSG Hi221 -- 2 secs to black feat. CCFL flicker & "burn" marks on power board
          by ttmi100x
          Greetings everyone,

I have a HANNSG Hi221 monitor that exhibits two seconds to black issues (backlight goes off, display is still on as confirmed by shining a flashlight on it) with some additional oddities...

The monitor failed on me with a standard "2 seconds to black" some time ago prompting me to initially replace most of the electrolytic capacitors (some of them were bulging/leaking).
Things kinda sorta worked for a night, then the problem returned along with some flickering and "buzzing" noises.

          Upon closer inspection...

WARNING: Live heatsinks & single pole on/off switches in switching power supplies
          by Per Hansson
This is a warning to inexperienced and experienced techs alike:
The De-facto standard is to have the primary side heatsink live in switching power supplies.
That is the primary side heatsink is referenced to the negative of the bulk filtering capacitor.
Therefore never ever touch the heatsink if the device is plugged in.
And even if it is unplugged let the capacitor discharge first!

Another really serious concern is that the power switch also by De-facto standard is single pole.
This means it only cuts power to the phase or neutral (not both) depending...
