    Kworld TV tuner card

    Has Stone 85C 1000uf 16v caps

Not bad yet, but I'm going to keep my eye on it... it doesn't have that many hours on it yet.

Those STONE caps look like they are general-purpose caps.

16v seems very excessive. i think you could replace them with 1000uf 6.3 no problem 5v is what the card will see. newbie2 is correct in his observation. might as well replace with low esr caps and see if there is any benefit.

i am currently enjoying an old pctvpro which under fedora 4.2 is recognised automatically on install and plays immediately via tvtime. so i can watch tv on a monitor next to my main screen. i havent watched movies for several months but now it works well this way as i cant hold my attention long enough to watch only tv.

kworld and avermedia are quite common here along with pinnacle. i vowed not to purchase another pinnacle as their driver/software support was rather silly as they require installation from original disk before update. Hauppage appear popular and i wonder if they are really any good. Ati Theatrix 550 appears to be the one to get but availability here is lacking.

Where did you buy that card, dood? I see a TV tuner that looks identical in Cyberguys catalog, thinking about getting it for TV in my room (antenna only tho).
          The great capacitor showdown!

hmm, well.. my tvcard doesn't even seem to have any elco caps

yep, i've seen a lot of 16v caps on the vga/pci cards and replacing them with 10v ones is okay. i never try it with the 6.3v though..
days are so short when you actually do something..

These capacitors filter the power rails for the card, because there can be induced noise after the power supply, even though it has good filtering. You are unlikely to have problems if you use a power supply with adequately rated electrolytic capacitors for each rail on the output side.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.
