Help selecting replacement caps for Abit AT8

    Hi,

I have a (5YO) Abit AT8 motherboard that has recently started suffering from spontaneous reboots. One of the six caps close to the CPU socket has vented. Thanks to this forum I have managed to identify these six caps as UCC KZG 2200uF 6.3V 10mm diameter. I understand that there are known issues with this series.

I checked a datasheet for the KZG which indicates the maximum impedance (ESR?) is 0.013 ohms and the rated ripple current is 2550mA. I'm having trouble working out which caps would be suitable replacements. From what I've read I understand that I need an ESR less than or equal and a ripple rating greater than or equal. Everything I've looked at so far doesn't fit the above criterion.

I'd be greatful if someone could point me in the right direction. I live in the UK - so anything stocked by Digikey, Farnell or RS would be great.

Also, should I replace all six of the KZGs or only the one that has vented? There's no bulging on the others and the board is clean.

    Thanks

Does it have extra (unpopulated) capacitor positions? If so, you can use more caps of less current rating.

      No, unfortunately not.

I've been doing some more looking around and it looks like Nichicon make an HM cap with exactly the same spec as the KGZ - but I can't source it here in the UK for a reasonable price or within a reasonable time.

hi, does this forum sometimes help with replacing other stuff? I have the same board with some missing bits that I need to know the names for: these and btw is there a "right place" that I would normally go looking for this info for? (I'm pretty ignorant about this) I'm guessing there isn't though. so thx in advance... if I just knew what the symbols were I can take it from there I guess. (the pcb says Q17, and R 84 and 88)

You should use these caps to replace them, and also replace all the other KZG on the board even if they are not showing signs of failure.

It is a lot of caps to replace and you should be comfortable doing this sort of thing because the lead holes are so small. Don't get overeager or you might life the traces.

For the other caps, KZG should be replaced with Rubycon MBZ/MCZ, Samxon GD/GC or Nichicon HM/HN. You can probably get all the caps you require from the store.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."
