    ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe: not starting, code 45

    Some tiem ago, I was testing some memory modules with Memtest. In one moment, I saw typical infinite list of errors appeared (usually indicating wholy dead module), bud after a second, comp turned off. From that moment, I was not able to start it.

    POST card says it hangs on code 45, which is:

    1) detect and initialize math coprocessor (Award)
    2) Data initialized. Checnikg for memory wraparound at 0: 0 and finding the total system memory size next (AMI)
    3) POST device initialization (Phoenix).

    Not sure which BIOS exactly it uses, it looks like Phoenix-Award.

    Anyway, any idea what could be wrong and if there is a possibiltiy of fixing it?

      Show us a pic of the board.

        Yes. Six lines below it says Award. Under download, there is Award-Phoenix.

        This is not my photo, the board is the same with two exceptions: it came to me with NB cooler changed for some Primecooler; all Chemi-Cons KZG looked fine but were already changed for Samxon GC (except two near PCIe); I recapped it just for case they were bad, but it's the same. Other caps on the board are Rubycons YXA and Panasonic FJ. I found two tiny LTec, 10 uF or so.

          That's because Award merged with Phoenix back in 1998.

            I know, I wrote an article about it few weeks ago. So it is probably Award.

            Connected with the memory, there is either problem with bus or with memory controller in CPU. But I tried two mikroprocessors (even if I did not know whether the Opteron was working) and both stop POST on code 45, so…

              I have this motherboard, but it's a A8N-SLI premium. Same thing happened. Guy brought his computer to a lan party, suddenly stopped working, and it hasn't since.

              I even replaced the bios chip with one flashed with the latest revision, still no dice. It just has Asus syndrome.

                This is incorrect.
                "detect and initialize math coprocessor" was for Award versions before v4.51.
                Your board would have version 6.x which came out when i810 was a current chipset.

                In versions 4.51 and up code 45 is 'reserved'.

                    OK, I think I will start to avoid contact even with old ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte boards, not only that I do not want to touch anything new from them.

                    I do not understand why people buy it. Gigabyte maybe, that's the best of them having not so crappy bunch of "heplfull" functions, but the other two even have their websites screwed four times of five I visit them.

                      simce you have nothing to loose you can always take the heat sink off and re-flow the chipset

                      it might work, most of nf3 or nf4 chipset works after this (i bet it would turn on after reflow )

                          I wouldn't have expected the A8Ns to have AMI for the BIOS.

                          Asus AMD boards usually had Award.

                          Intel boards often have AMI.
