Dell 2408WFPb: faulty TCon or main board?

The previous owner gave me this broken monitor, saying "the picture is distorted".

They shipped it to me by courier, during which time it was probably kept in a cold warehouse.

On arrival I plugged it in and it worked fine on VGA and HDMI. I noted that when no signal is applied, the monitor cycles between solid colours: red, green, blue, black, white.

I forgot about it for a while. Next time I plugged it in was a different story. The on-screen display was extremely distorted. It just looked like noise, and after a few seconds it disappeared completely.

The colour cycling still works, and the backlight turn on and off at the appropriate times. The controls still work and I am able to switch inputs, although it is difficult without seeing the OSD.

When a VGA signal is connected I see a constant solid white screen. When HDMI is connected it is solid orange. Brightness control doesn't appear to have any effect.

The power board is supplying 23V as expected. There is nothing unusual looking on the PCBs. I can supply pictures if you want but it looks exactly like all the others that people have posted.

I connected my laptop on VGA with display mirroring and sent a full screen alternating black and white picture. I was able to scope it from the connector into what I presume is the video digitizer/scaler (the smaller of the two chips with heat sinks), and from there out into the RAM chips (presumably a video FIFO).

When I scope the LVDS signal during no-signal colour cycling I can see the signal changing, but with my black and white test signal the LVDS signals appear constant. So it seems that the TCon is displaying what it is being sent, and the problem is with the main board.

The main board is not really worth replacing for what the monitor is worth. The TCon is only like $5 though. Is it worth trying to replace that?

Any other ideas what could be wrong? Unfortunately I don't have cold spray to test if that revives it.

try heat from a hair dryer. Only heat that much that you don't burn yourself.

      Update on this:

I removed the main board and I found a strange oily liquid on what I assume is a thermal pad on the bottom. It does not seem to conduct electricity. I am not sure if it is a problem, but it doesn't seem good. Pictures attached.

I bought one of those universal LVDS drivers for £5 from ebay and with some fiddling I was able to get it to work, so it seems the t-con is not faulty.

The main board gets quite hot just from being powered so I don't think adding more heat is going to help.

Final update: I was able to fix it with a new main board from Aliexpress.

Driving a Sharp TCON/panel with a universal main board
          by advant
This thread is about trying to get an Universal Main Board to work with a Sharp TCON and panel.

I have a Sharp LC-46D85UN TV that has had a main board issue. Since this model is from 2009, I am not able to find an exact replacement of the main board. Instead, I decided to see if I can future proof this tv by getting a Universal Main Board (T53U21.2) from China to work with the Sharp TCON (CPWBX4291TPZA) and panel. The universal main board supports a 8 bit dual channel LVDS interface whereas the TCON requires a 10 bit dual channel LVDS input. I have modded the LVDS connector to match...

          ONN 100012588
Issue: No Power, Then Rebooting After Main Board Change

Short answer: replace main board and power board
Technical answer: replace main board and Q306 & Q307 on power board.

          Long answer:

TV wouldn't turn on. Power switch was fine which means the main board isn't processing the power on signal. Replaced main board. TV turns on now but randomly reboots. Bad main board? EEPROM? Tried to pull main board and got a shock touching the corner of the board. That's weird. C334 (450V 10uf) capacitor is still holding a high charge....

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't

Is it possible to upgrade from a Vestel 17MB97 main board to a 17MB110 Main board?
          by cheeky2
I suppose the real question is whether the existing pinouts from ether a 17IPS71 psu are cross compatible with a 17IPS12 psu? If they are then the exchange of the main boards should have no issues providing the screen is compatible with both main boards. Obviously you can change the screen configurations easily enough (providing you have the correct files) for the main board. Why may you ask would I do this? Well a lot of the smart features are no longer working on a Hitachi 48HBT62U main board I wish to give it a new lease of life!
Obviously the same LVDS connector for the screen connection...
