    PSU LCD Monitor I - INC CY199 PCB: EP/YP-784 REV:1

    Hello,

Replacing some of the caps on this PSU and have a few questions please.

Replaced a 82uF 400v cap that had slight buldge and tested, it reads 87.3uF now, presuming a failed cap can go down or up from it's operating uF?

The replaced cap is physically shorter and the original was horizontal on the PCB (longer) but ratings are the same and I managed to solder it upright in my haste. The PCB remounts and the thin metal protective cover (over complete PCB) fits but is flush with this cap, guessing it's a bad idea as the cap won't vent upwards but discharge down around the PCB - can I get away with it or do I order another cap and resolder?

PSU's and blown caps in LCD's are common place given most of them cook without fans?

    Thanks,
    Gareth.

Yes, you should get a new capacitor and mount it sideways like the original. You could also just use some solid-core (make sure it is fairly stiff too!) wire to solder the capacitor onto the board sideways. be sure to give the capacitor a dab of glue to hold it in place on the board.

The fact that the metal cover touches the top of the capacitor is bad, because the capacitor's metal casing could be at a high voltage, which will cause a short when it touches the metal cover (assuming the metal cover is grounded, which it most likely is). If the metal cover isn't grounded, then the metal cover and possibly other metal things inside the monitor could be at a high voltage then, posing a shock hazard.

Be sure to get good capacitors, like panasonic, rubycon, nichicon, or nippon chemi-con. Replace the rest of the capacitors on the PSU while you are at it!
