I snagged a true flat Sony Trinitron (Dell branded model P1110) 21" monitor for nearly nothing the other day... Of course it didn't work (I knew that when I bought it)... I finally cracked it open today...
The monitor fired up but had no display... Upon further testing, I discovered that the filament voltage was missing. I substituted filament voltage from an outside power source, and she lit up like a Christmas tree... This told me the CRT wasn't defective, so I started backtracking the filament power circuit. I ended up in the power module, where I discovered a vented Rubycon 100uF 25v cap, (yes KC8, it was a GENUINE Rubycon
). I also discovered a shorted diode package (part# YG802C09) in the path of this fried cap. What probably happened was the diode package shorted, fed back through the cap and popped it. I replaced both components, and viola! The SHARPEST monitor I've ever seen!
While bad caps was not the initial cause of the trouble, it was the end result...
