Fixed 42" LCD TV from local dump

Picked up a 42" 720p LG 42LC46 from the local dump (household waste center.) Paid £20 for it. Fault description - no power - not even standby power. Four faulty capacitors. Replaced with Rubycon YXF (£5 total), same value, same WV. Works good as new. It's apparently a very common fault with the 42LC46. This saved me almost £400 on upgrading to a new TV from our old CRT. TBH, I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p from a 10ft distance.

I find it ridiculous that this TV only lasted 4 years. Yes, I got it for free - but someone obviously threw it out as they couldn't repair it.

If anyone else has an LG with no power (not even standby power) check the four 2200u 10V capacitors. They seem to be the culprit. Two for the standby supply and two for the primary supply.

Good job.

It's not surprising you can't tell the difference between 720P and 1080P. The LCD panel has 1366 x 768 resolution - 720P.

I also repaired a Samsung 42 " inch LCD TV from the side of the road find

I found that the cap on the 5 volt power supply rail had pop it top and one other cap had done the same thing

Replaced the two caps and it works as good as new

Good job.

It's not surprising you can't tell the difference between 720P and 1080P. The LCD panel has 1366 x 768 resolution - 720P.

I know it's 720p but I've seen a 1080p and I just said: "meh." Doesn't bother me.

Not that I would complain if I found a 1080p and replaced the 720p with it .

Yeah. I keep wishing a 27-30" 1080P LCD TV would drop into my hands. It would make a great monitor!!! And I could even view two web pages or top and bottom pictures of a circuit board at the same time.

Monitors I have got for very little:

19" Xerox 4:3 LCD - 7 bad caps good as new cost £0 + £5 to fix
42" LG LCD TV - 4 bad caps good as new cost £20 + £5 to fix
32" Philips LCD TV - broken LCD panel - in the process of selling or stripping for parts
[NOTE: This Philips was full of Rubycon and UCC caps! Damn, the end of cheap broken TVs?]
26" Goodmans LCD TV - no picture but sound (coming soon - probably a broken inverter/CCFLs or loose cable, maybe even bad caps... cost £30)
32" LG LCD TV - switches itself off randomly (bad caps!! almost certainly! for £30 too!)
15" Dell monitor (repairing now - cost £10, company sold it to me after they decided they did not want me to repair it)

The 32" LG is going in the bedroom and the 26" will probably be sold or kept for another room. The 15" will go in an office or be a spare alongside my 14" which I got for free (but in working condition.)

Add another monitor (or two) to the existing monitor. Not the same as one big monitor; better in some ways, like being able to turn off the one not being used.

Seems like most places they would end up ... the screen would be badly scratched or cracked ... from people treating them like junk.

Nice, Tom.

You may want to replace the rest of those samwhas, though. Had a bunch in VCR power supplies go bad and leak, luckily that didn't short across the traces and blow the supply up.


Isn't it amazing? It seems like no matter how cheap or expensive something is, as long as it's considered "consumer (consumable) electronics," it will invariably have crapacitors...

It's funny how my 22 inch Acer LCD monitor seems small now. For years I had a 15 LCD and lived with it. Now I'm thinking about doing the same with one of my 32" LCD TV's, once I get one of em repaired. Although, It would be tons better if my video card (old ATI All in wonder) could render a suitable resolution for that size screen. I would first need a video card with HDMI outputs. My computer is old and only has PCI and a limited AGP slot - no PCI-E. So i'm back to just using what I have until it dies.

My first monitor was a 9" monochrome. Over the years I've upgraded many times; a lot of them were 14" (actually viewable size of less than 13"). Currently I'm using a 23" wide screen LCD which is more than acceptable for most uses. The major exception is when trying to display two pictures side by side and identify the component on the top that belongs to the lead on the bottom.

I remember someone using a photo editor where they could super impose one image on top of another.
If I remember correctly you could identify what was on top and bottom of the board.
Wonder if a program like that would let you display two images side by side in the same picture?
