Re: Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
1. Well, in addition to what is in that thread, Service Manual troubleshooting said it was various things, or a bad wire between TCU and ECU, or a bad ECU. The wire checked good, so it had to be a bad ECU.
2. Ya, pretty much. I like to think I'm pretty good at board level repair (even better when I have a schematic).
3. Right, avsforum.com . I'm not sure of a better place. Although, a user just introduced me to http://www.hifiengine.com/library/onkyo/tx-sr607.shtml . Seems a lot of...

Re: Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
I posted again because I was contacted by private message, so I wrapped it up publicly. Yes, we think alike.
What's funny is I also have a spare Athlon64-x2 Dual for it. But no, I don't think so because I only repair quads these days. Also, so many other things to do or fix (and only so much time).
Coolest repair I'm most proud of recently ... replaced leaking cap on the motherboard of my 1994 Honda Accord main ECU computer. That one little cap was keeping the whole car from running. Works fine now...

Re: Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
Well, I replaced the caps (back in 2011) but the Asus (HP OEM) board still doesn't power-up.
I'm guessing it was one of the smaller caps I missed, or there is something else wrong with the board. It's NOT the AMD CPU because it tests good i another machine.
When I went to repair this board, it was just a bad board in parts box. I had previously replaced it with:

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
Repair worked great.
The machine was re-installed and has been under heavy use for a couple of weeks now ... no problems what-so-ever.

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
The parts came in, so I replaced the following bloated/ leaking caps.:
(5) Nichicon (Black/Gold) 820uf-6.3v HN(M) series
- Right next to CPU
(1) Nichicon (Black/Gold) 820uf-6.3v HN(M) series
- Right next to CPU Fan connector
Even though these were EXACT replacements, the first thing I noticed was that the new caps are only half as tall as the originals ... I guess their manufacturing process has improved in the last 6 years?
I heated up the de-soldering gun attachment...

Re: Fixed 42" LCD TV from local dump
Can you recommend some good places to find them?
Seems like most places they would end up ... the screen would be badly scratched or cracked ... from people treating them like junk....

Re: Dell XPS 410, KZG 6.3v Caps
The Dell XPS-410 power supplies are 375w. They will handle a fully loaded machine at the max config allowable at time of purchase back in 2007.
Max config:
Intel Core2 QUAD q6600
4 gb RAM (all slots filled)
nVidia 8800 gtx
(2) 7200rpm HDD
but at that config, when the machine was stressed to max (like 3D gaming ... Crysis maybe) the PS is running at around 85%. Easy for a nice new high quality PS, but not so easy for a 4 year old PS.
When I upgraded my two 410's (with q6600) to...Last edited by Tesla; 07-06-2011, 06:42 PM.

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
Well, the only 820uf 6.3v caps I could find here were Samxon, but they are GD series and not the best match for Nichicon HN.
So, I end up at DK. I love their website (filters and all) but their Nichicon stock didn't seem to be as good as I remembered. I don't need 600 caps :-) It's probably because I'm shopping for higher-end HZ, HN, HM and not HE like usual ... but still. I mean, if you can't get them here or at DK ... then where? If you are going to take the time to do this, you might as well use the right parts.

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
Excellent chart.
Add the Maker names, and turn it into a HTML table.
Install in the site's ZenCart. I'm pretty sure you can hard-code the links to query make/model (series) stock ... and query results will change based on current item inventory.

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
I found 2 sticks of DDR-333 (in my parts box) and stuck them in the other 2 slots. It seems to work fine and both sets seem to be running in dual-channel mode. The DDR-400 might have slowed a little to DDR-333 speed ... but I'll take 1gb however I can get it. However, I have never mixed RAM speeds like that before (I know better).
XP and MediaPortal really need a minimum of 1gb to run nice. Getting this box up to 1gb for free played a large part in the decision to try to fix it or not....Last edited by Tesla; 07-06-2011, 04:32 PM.

Re: Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
Well, my supplier didn't have Nichicon HM or HN in stock, so I ordered 6 HZ (glad you said they might work). So, for $5 and some time I'll give it a shot.
A new (inexpensive one ... like this one) AM2 socket board is less than $50, so if this doesn't work, that would be my next option. I don't even have parts to build this board up to a whole system ( I don't even have DDR2 RAM or a CPU cooler for it). But, the new or used parts will come later (they always seem to) ... but it would be cool to fix it for $5 ... it's that whole "hobby...

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
Thanks again for all your help (everyone).
I have ordered exact Nichicon HN replacements for this board. I'll post back later and let you all know how it went.
A Sticky with a cross-reference chart (brands and grade steps) might help MB re-cap newbies (like me) and might help to eliminate some post questions.

Re: Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
So, the plan for this board ...
Replace (6) KZG 1800uf 6.3v - Right next to the processor
- These above are the only questionable looking ones
- Plus, this seems to be a right failure location.
- Plus, plus ... well, they are KZG
Keep all the Panny 1000uf 16v and 1500uf 6.3v
The next set of candidates are (11) KZG 820uf 6.3v scattered around the board. They seem to be installed ... one next to each external port or slot.
Whats strange about them is that they are only half...

Replacing KZG ...
If I'm following the series grade ladder properly ... if Nichicon HM are not available, wouldn't Nichicon HN be my next choice?...

Re: Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
1. So lower impendence and lower ESR isn't always better?
2. Really? ALL as in every single one ... even the small ones scattered around?
3. Yes, T-shaped vent stamps.

ESR Meter usage to fix Motherboards
Does anyone have any tips on using my ESR-Micro v4 ESR Meter?
In practice, it would be with in-circuit caps that physically look ok. If I have to take the time to pull them out to check them (yes, I know that is the only 100% reliable way), I think I would just replace them with a new one. Or, do people really do that ... remove, test, resolder ... or even rotate them down the line ... like repairing christmas tree lights?
Just wondering if you use one, and if so, how exactly?

Re: First Recap - Intel OEM MB from Gateway P4
Ok, so:
KZE = Nichicon HD
KZG = Nichicon HM
But Nichicon HZ is the king of the low impendence/low ESR ... so won't they work to replace just about anything? I thought lower ESR was always better. Just asking ... trying to understand.

Asus ABMZN-LA from HP (AMD X2)
This board started having trouble turning on ... gradually getting worse, until finally not at all. The processor and PS are good.
A couple of years ago, I was only looking for exploded caps. Now that I've been repairing SMPS and putting together a order to do my first MB, I thought I would take another look at it (now that I know what to look for).
Sure enough, it has KZG 1800uf 6.3v (brown with white) and it looks like some right around the processor ... the gasket is coming out of the bottom (making them tip over a bit). In the other thread, I've been advised that...Last edited by Tesla; 07-06-2011, 03:15 AM.

Re: Dell Dimension 4700C - V-Core Rubycon MCZ's were ALL bad
Also, check that the 4 solder connections (for 2 loops) that hold down the NorthBridge passive Heat-Sink are soldered in good.
My father-in-law has a Dell 4600c. The other day, I found that one loop got so hot it un-soldered itself and the HS fell off. It also completes a circuit, so the BIOS complained about HS Failure. The one that was still in there looked like a cold solder, so I also removed and resoldered that one as well.
It had a pad (instead of paste) and it looked fine, so I just...

RE: KZ(x)
Yes, sorry ... I assumed KZE and KZG were basically the same. What is KZ(x)? Is that a brand?
So, all these look fine and will stay:
KZE
Fujitsu polys
Nichicons 470uf 10v VR (and smaller-lower scattered around)
One lone Rubycon 2200uf 10v MHZ (way down by south-bridge)
We are down to just replacing all the Nichicon 820 HN ... is that right? Which just happen to be all the caps that are bloated and leaking.
If you think I should...
