I'd picked up a 15" LCD for $15 a while back. It was the type with external power brick, it has absolutely no power supply on board, so it needs both 5v and 12v. The seller turned out to be a store clerk at one of the electronics stores i visit regularly.
When i got on the subway (where there was good lighting) i immediately noticed a number of black blotches. Cracked screen. He agreed to give me my money back, i ended up dropping by at his work with it. Today i went to that store to buy some 18awg copper wire for winding inductors. It turns out he kept the monitor there, and he found someone who wanted the electronics. Probably $5 is better than having an useless monitor around... So he asked me if i could take it and wire a power connector to it, so he can show that guy that it lights up then drop by again when i have time and he'll buy me a beer. Oh alright...
The retention tab on one of the LCD ribbons was missing so i never bothered to even power it up first time around, i was convinced it was cracked anyway. I stole a tab from a junked dvdrom, fitted it to the panel, that secured the cable nicely. I soldered a molex to it and plugged it into a PC power supply. It lit up alright... but it looks even weirder than i'd imagined with the screen off. I've never seen a screen like this - i think i couldn't crack one in this style even if i tried. What's funny is that unlike a typical screen crack, the blotches will not expand further if i press on them.
Take a look...
