    Troubleshooting Acer AL2416w - Bad Capacitor?

    After reading around this forum a while and locating this thread:

    My husband and I took apart his Acer monitor. The last two days it has refused to work. It will flash the Acer logo and then go black. We checked to see if it was the capacitors, but they look fine to us. He has already ordered a new monitor, but I was hoping to get his monitor working for my use or for a backup.

    Monitor has same results with VGA and DVI. We've tried shining a light on the monitor with a flashlight after the Acer logo goes away, but we see no image.

    Can anyone tell from the pics anything?

    1) Does the power LED stay green or blue after the Acer logo goes to black?

    2) If you hookup a working computer with your favourite wallpaper and shine a flashlight on the lcd, do you see the wallpaper? Your description above isn't clear to me if you had a working computer hooked up or not?

    3) Do you have a multimeter?

    4) The 10 caps on the inverter board can be problematic. Capacitors (C designation on the PCB board) die from age, heat, and shoddy build quality. Capacitors DO NOT have to be visibly bloated in order to bad. They can be out of tolerance uF (a 1000uF measures 20uF) and/or have high ESR (ohm). A multimeter will be insufficient to test for ESR. For that you need an ESR tester which costs between $50 and $300.

      Not from the pics. But from experience. I'd give it an 85% chance the problem is located on the 3rd picture. Your inverter board. There's several threads on this model already. We just finished helping "froggy" with his. He reported success today even.

      Basically. You'll be looking at replacing the little green mini-caps. A shorted transistor or two. And quite probably a fuse or two.

      If you have a multimeter, there's technicians here that can help you test those components to find out which ones have shorted.

      And if you don't have a multimeter. Get one. They are fairly inexpensive these days

        edit: oh and those caps don't need to be bulging to be bad..
