Acer 1916B no picture, Blinking power light

    Hi All,

I have an Acer 1916B with the "no picture, Blinking power light" syndrome. I have minimal electronics/home electric experience (from high school one of my best courses), a craftsman 81079 dvm, and have been shocked before by home, electronics, and automotive. I am not afraid to try and fix this thing, if I can. Any help in this or any regards would be greatly appreciated. I have attached some photos, hopefully not to many.

I did 2 of these a while ago.
I'd replace all of the electrolytic caps (except the big one) on the power supply/inverter board to start.
Use good quality Low esr caps (Panasonic FM are my favourite, but if I remember correctly I needed FCs for one, as the FMs were too tall, so check the specs before ordering.
Ahh yes, looking at this thread: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11877
It was the 470@25 FMs that were too tall.

Thanks, for the quick reply. What does "FC" and "FM" mean?

Those are the types of Panasonic capacitors.
FM are slightly better rated than FC, but sometimes FC are better suited to an application.

If you're in the USA, try purchasing from digikey.com:

Here's the best way to order from digikey:

          1) Go to digikey.com

          2) In the "parts search" window type: panasonic fm and select "GO" button

          3) Under the Capacitor heading select "Aluminum"

          4) The first two columns you see are capacitance and voltage. Highlight the value and voltage with your mouse and select the "Apply Filters" button

          5) You'll see several selections available. Here's what to look for:

          a) Look at the quantity available and minimum purchase. If "0" are available, then there's none to purchase. Some selections require a minumum purchase of a 1000 units, which you also don't want. I think you get the picture.

          b) height and diameter. Measure the original caps and compare to what's listed.

          6) If your value is out of stock, go back to the beginning and type in "panasonic fc" and go through the same process.

          7) During the checkout process select USPS First Class shipping, since this will give the best ship rate.

Nice pics! And nice tutorial on the wonders of Digikey....especially the cheap USPS postage. I get my orders in less than 5 days and use the Panasonic FM types whenever size allows. I've also laid them down on their side if there's room and I don't have quite the right size...watch out for nearby conductors though and fouling the cooling of the board.

You should be up in no time after re-capping, as the logic board looks okay (wait 'till it won't work then I'll be sorry I said that)!

Hi all, that replied with the wonderful advice and suggestions.
Special thanks to this forum as well.
The monitor now works after replacing all the caps on the power board.
How can I officially thank those who helped me personally here?

              Take care for now.

Good to hear! What kind of caps did you use?

Smason, I was so excited to do the repair, that I went to my local electronics store and bought cheap caps (they were a mixed bag of caps).
But, I swear next time I will order through digikey or whom ever is suggested by the veterans at BadCaps.net.

                  Thanks again.

Next time won't be too far off. May as well order them now.
