Dell 2005FPW not powering up, blinking green power switch light

We've been having problems with this monitor for a while and actually went back to an old one when it went bad. Then I found this site, and ended up replacing the C635 & C637 caps which fixed things - as it turned out - temporarily. The original rolling problem is still gone (C635 & C637 helped that), but now it won't turn on - the "1" and power switch lights blink green, and nothing happens.

We've tried replacing C103 & C107, and still nothing (same symptoms). However, we didn't read the instructions in another post (https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...pw+works+hours) closely enough to realize that the two caps weren't both 47uF, and since we're 50+ miles from the nearest retail store, we went ahead and used the 47uF in place of the C103 47uF and the C107 1uF. Is this the likely problem?

Also, in retrospect we didn't note which way the polarity ran before we removed the old caps, so we placed them with the gray stripe running on the side of the board that was marked with a black line (opposing directions, as it turned out). Was the correct?

We're kinda newbies at this (well, ok, I am - my husband is an engineer, but hasn't done circuit work in decades), and we can use all the help we can get (unemployment means no funds for a new monitor).

A few things first before we can help.

    1) Do you have a multimeter? If yes, are you familiar with how to use it? If not, we can provide instructions.

    2) We need pics of your boards because your board may not be identical to others posted here. Even the smallest component change is significant.

    3) Post clear focused pictures AFTER reading

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1868

    4) Please do not post pictures inline as they slow down the loading of pages.

    5) For best picture quality and clarity take your boards to a window on a sunny day, turn flash off, and use macro mode. Take a top down view of all your boards (front and back). Make sure the photo is legible so that we can read the PCB printing clearly. A shutter speed of 1/125 or faster will produce nice clear focused pictures. Try to get a photo that is 2000x2000 resolution or as close as possible.

    6) Here is an example of the pictures we want.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Also, what brand and make of capacitors did you use for replacements? If you used general purpose Radio Shack type of caps, they are not recommended for LCD power/SMPS applications.

Low ESR caps are recommended and can be purchased from digikey.com (if you live in the USA) and shipping costs are around $2.75 for you order.

We went to Fry's Electronics and bought the capacitors there. The brand name is "NTE". The package says "Electrolytic Capacitor" "High Temperature". Part #VHT47M50; website www.nteinc.com

That's part of the problem. Those caps are not designed to be used in the power supply of a monitor, and will fail quickly. Note the links in my signature on obtaining caps. My personal favorite is Panasonic FM or FC series from Digikey. When you look up their prices you will regret buying from Frys.

OK, I can go to the digikey site, but what am I looking for? I tried doing a search, but its overwhelming.

Re: Dell 2005FPW not powering up, blinking green power switch light

NTE caps are not low ESR and should -not- be used in this type of power supply. As retiredcaps pointed out, you can't use Radio Shack type "general purpose" caps. NTE caps may be nicer than Radio Shack's, but are still not for this application.

The 47uF replacement for a 1uF is not correct and needs to be corrected. Typically you can go up a value or 2 for a quick-fix (1 to 2.2 or 3.3), but you should return the unit to the "as-made" condition promptly.

Replacement of all the caps on the power board (sans the biggest one), and the 2 on the logic board, with shipping would cost < $20 using better grades of caps than it was built with.

Re-replacement of C635 & C637 with the correct type would be my first move. Then move on to the power supply caps.

Please provide original cap brand manufacturer, capacitance, voltage, series (2 or 3 letters) -usually- near the temp rating, diameter in mm and height in mm. The (M) is a 20% tolerance marking and it is not necessary to report. Sometimes the series follows that mark immediately - (M)ABC 105°C or precedes it - FG(M)

With that information, you can be guided to the correct replacements.

This failed -before- you did anything to the power supply caps, correct?

              Welcome to the forums!

You are right, it's overwhelming at first. Here's my suggested way of selecting caps.

Can't give you any info on the originals since they are somewhere in the landfill. It did fail before we replaced the C103 & C107 caps. Before that, after replacing the C635 & C637 caps, it was working great (no rolling). Using PlainBill's suggestions, I'll go find and order the correct ones for both boards (might as well be thorough) at digikey.

To the two questions still unanswered - 1) is it likely that these caps are the problem? and 2) does the stripe go into the board through the black-line marked hole?

Re: Dell 2005FPW not powering up, blinking green power switch light

Well, the brand and series used on the logic board is/was probably the same for the most part. Given that bit of information, and the values and sizes of the 2 caps, we should be able to arrive at the proper replacements.

                    Answers:

                    1) Yes, perhaps. It's a deliberately guarded answer because we are relying on your input and observations and measurements. Think of it as calling the doctor and describing your symptoms, and asking for him to prescribe something to relieve your headache. He will ask questions and based on your responses, -may- prescribe the right medication. Whereas if he was face to face with you, and able to see the lump on the side of your head, he probably wouldn't just prescribe an aspirin.

                    2) Definitely. Simply compare to the other caps already in place. Always good to take pictures and/or draw a map of the board and components to refer to.

                      Hello,

I have a Lenovo here that does not want to power on. The motherboard appears to be clean, no sign of corrosion or obvious fried components. When plugged in, I see 3 blinking lights and then off. It would cycle the 3 blinking lights every 10 seconds or so as long as I have the adapter plugged in. Amp meter shows 20 volts, 0.224 amps, no fan spin, red light indicator near the charge port.

Thermal camera shows a section of the motherboard that is warmer than the rest. It is near the connector labels JRTC1 (CMOS battery). Diode measurement to ground for pin 1 = OL,...

                      by jxrepman
                      Hi there,

I have this ASUS X453MA Laptop that's not turning on. When I plug in the charger, the green light just keeps on blinking and pressing the power button does nothing.

I have checked the charger and it is giving 19+ V

I have disconnected the battery and pressed power button for 30 seconds.

                      I tried another RAM stick.

Tried disconnecting the keyboard and touchpad.

Tried disconnecting the HDD and the wifi adapter.

                      The problem persists.

Hope you could help me out on this one. Thank you.

                      by CapLeaker
I've got a bunch of Poly VVX-250 VOIP phones that work fine as kind as long as they are plugged into the wall wart. Recently I got around to install a couple of TP-Link 5 port POE switches that are added to the existing plain Jane 24 port unmanaged switch. Great!!! Finally I am able to ditch the wall warts from these phones making more space on the desk, plus I am gaining some badly needed power outlets. So I thought.

Plugged in the first VVX-250 into the POE switch, booted up no problem. Plugged in the other Poly phones and they start to boot anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds,...
