Make sure to replace the caps (c80, c83) on the main board also.

Ahhh - good to know. I may have spoken too soon - if I'm really close to the monitor, I can see flickering pixels/areas. The flickering is a definite pattern - vertical columns which repeat across the screen - very faint and only noticeable on certain colored backgrounds (can't see it on black background for instance).

Would replacing c80, c83 help the flicker problem?

Hey all, long-time reader, first time poster. It looks like I have the same issue as ngstime, page 23. Funny thing is I thought it was the power at first, so I disassembled to look at the caps. I must have the super power supply. It doesn't match anything found in this forum, as half of my caps are coded CS instead of C, and none of the numbers match. The caps seem of higher quality than most of the bads ones being replaced. So I'm hoping and praying that it's just the two caps C80 and C83 on the mainboard causing my intermittent black screen. Thank you all for keeping this forum going. This monitor has a bit of nostalgic value, having had it for nearly 5 years now. I hope I can keep it from croaking, wish me luck.

Bummer, I should have checked the link first. The digikey link for C80 and C83 is no longer there. Can someone recommend a good high-quality replacement? A quick search of the forum doesn't list specific specs for those aside from voltage and capacitance. I don't think I have the skills to find a proper match.

So i have the same monitor, and had similar problems.
A cleaning of the PSU of the brown flux made the psu outputs back to spec
But my problem is now it will turn on and show my pc screen sometimes for up to 60 seconds, then go black. But the screen still has light just no pixels are lighting up, kinda a dim black.
the 12v line is about 11.85 under load
the 5v line is 5.05v under load
the 5sb is around 4.89V
the 24V line is 24.02V
When i put my scope on the lines under load they had a bit of noise nothing more than about 0.4V
But the 24V line had about 24.4 high to a low of 22.6V every 10ms
But again the screen CFLs are on just no image on screen.
Was testing only via the vga port.
Based on these finding im thinking maybe the psu is fine but the logic board is giving some sort of problem.
Also the computer still thinks the monitor is attached when the screen goes black.
Have yet to replace caps on the board and do not yet have a ESR metter.
Any ideas before i go and order caps?

Change the two caps on the main board, C80, 83, see link on post 507.

Okay thanks for that, replaced the two caps with some rubycon 100uf 35v caps and it works perfectly.
But i have a feeling im going to be replacing the rest of the caps within the next 6-8 months.
Also got an ESR metter on the way so i can test the caps better.

I made a mistake. I am replacing the caps on my HG281D power supply (Rev 2). Upon removing them, I cannot determine which cap values go at location cs18 and cs28. I know these two are 220 and 100 uf, but I don't know which is which. Would someone take a look and let me know? Thank you in advance. Larry

Hi all

About 1 year ago (post #349) I had resolved the first trouble with my Hanns.G (screen going black for a second or 2 every once in a while) with the info in this monster-thread.
Now, 1 year later, the PSU of my monitor has started to act up making it more and more difficult to get the display to turn on.
And once again, with the info accumulated here, my monitor is running fine again. After replacing the 8 caps mentioned again and again (C603, C606, C707, C406, C605, C108, C111, C114) the monitor powers up without a hitch.

Hi, just joined and have very limited electronics experience but am willing to have a go at fixing my HG281D.

Basically one of my monitors took multiple attempts to switch on but once it was on it ran OK. As timed passed more attempts were needed and eventually I left it switched on permanently(to avoid hassle), then one day it just died. I'm guessing it might be something to do with the power supply and so have ended up on these boards.

I've been trying to absorb this long thread and work out what to do next. From what I understand I need a ESR meter to check the capacitors on the power supply and when I find a dodgy one I replace it? My power supply seems to be the same model as user usbdevice, PSM217 404-H-R, Rev A1. Can anyone recommend where to source components in the UK? TIA

Digital multimeter? Just dug one(quite old) out of my toolbox, what do you want me to try to do?
