    Mackie VLZ-Pro 24.4 Consoles

    I have a friend who is a service tech for mixing consoles.
    He said the chronic weak spot in my 24.4 console is the power supply.

    The # 1 failure of these consoles is the +16V regulator IC...due to heat degradation.
    The IC that's goes bad is located on the supply's heat sink located directly above the screened vent in the bottom case.
    The failure of the IC (LM317t) is a combination of a lack of cooling, dried up heat sink compound and two dried up caps.
    These are electrolytic capacitors (10uf @ 50V) on the power supply PCB.
    My question is, does anybody have any knowledge about the size spec for the 10uF / 50V caps? He says the stock caps are rated 85C, and to make sure to get 105C because of the heat.

    We also discussed internal fans to cool this area.

    LM317T is just a standard variable linear regulator.. No fancy switching here.. No idea about the size, but 105C rated caps are always a good idea around linear Vreg's that are either dropping a large amount of voltage, or passing a lot of current.. I forget the exact limit for current on a 317T, i'm thinking either 1.5 or 2.5A, but you have to have a large heatsink for those kinds of currents..

      317T is 1A MAX. Better get a efficient transistor and have 317T drive that transistor instead for higher current capacity and less heat.

        Thanks for the replies.
        The tech told me this console is quite reliable as long as the IC has working heat paste and the 10uF/50v caps are good.

        We discussed at length adding a pair of A/C fans, in a push-pull arrangement to positively cool the PSU. He said this will add years of life to a solid console.
        I have to get this done before our torrid summer season sets in.

        I have a four day event in mid-May, and it will probably be hot.

          The datasheets is explict on 1A and it did say with infinity cooling (overkill).

          There are versions of higher current 317 regulators and they are large package but it is prudent to design a circuit using a 317T to drive a voltage regulating transistor that can handle higher current if you can use a low drop voltage transistor (less heat).
          We could have you use buck regulator but the noise would get into audio circuits so I decide against this unless one design a 100-500KHz buck regulator.

            A good high temp general purpose capacitor is what you need here. I'd select a long life type.

              In my search for a proper 5v heavy ATX power supply, I selected an old Antec SU-380 that I've had in storage for a long time. Opening the power supply reveals a couple bulged capacitors. I removed all the caps and made a map for myself. I found the datasheet for the PCE TUR series in this thread:

              Hello,
              I'm troubleshooting a PA speaker Mackie Th15 (schematics attached).
              It is basically a smps with amp and some dsp.
              The issue is that on the secondary side I read +/- ~23V instead of the expected +/- 38V. Indeed all secondary side and feedback/aux rails are like 1/2-3/5 of the expected values.
              Q2, Q3, C35, C40, C33, C36, C41 and C42 were tested out of circuit with a component tester and read fine. Most of the other components on the primary were tested in circuit and seem to be fine. +HV to -HV on primary is ~330V.
              By the way, the ferrite core of L10 is broken,...

              hello.

              I have Sega Saturn and 5 years ago, I recapped all of capacitor in the Power supply, Because At that time, It frequently freezed black screen after SEGA logo displayed.

              It hardly ever freezed after I finished to recap all of caps in the power supply.

              But Yesterday, It did not show any screen at all and its green power LED constantly blinked.

              To my surprise I found that all of two NXH 10v 2200uf capacitors in the secondary area of Power supply have been bulged and It measured 57 mF and 75 mF capacitance.

              It seems that quality...

              Hello Everyone.

              The issue with this audio device was a very low bass level ; tracking the bass signal path on the preamp module i discovered a missing component (resistor R98) on the inverting input of op. amp U14 (allegedly active low pass filter) (see picture).
              I put a 1k resistor but now R/L passive speakers sound level is too low compared with bass level ; i guess resistor value is wrong

              Can someone tells me what's the correct value of R98 on preamp pcb
              or
              can someone provide me with schematics / service manual

              I am not ashamed to say this is my first FM alignment I have ever done. I am well versed in electronics and repair. Been doing it for many years on Pro Audio Live sound equipment. Worked on Power amps EQ's musical gear and Large format Mixing Live consoles Etc. But now I can see this is a whole different world when it comes to tweaking this kind of gear. I do have the proper gear like the SENCORE SG 80 and HP Generators and Scopes Etc.

              Look below at Adjustment 12:8. The Null adjustment. I have a Heathkit IM-28 VTVM that was rebuilt and has new Burned in tubes that I used for this...
