Harman Kardon HS250 , Low volume problem.

    Hey guys ,

A friend of mine asked to take a look at his harman kardon set. It turns on fine but the volume is very low on max settings. It goes max to 0DB but the volume is low.

I replaced all capacitors in the powersupply section except for 1. A 2200uf/25v , dont have that 1 anymore. Could replace it for 3300uf , no room for 2 caps in series.
There is absolutely no difference in volume after replacing the caps.

Anyone familiar with these models? Im suspecting one of the diode's.....

I will buy some freeze spray and freeze the diode's. See if it changes anything.

Why don't you start by getting the service manual. Have you tried a processor reset or master reset? were any of the caps you replaced bad?
I had a quick look in the manual and there are a few modes that might result in no/low audio ir the system is in pause mode or slow motion

Thanks for the reply. I already checked the service manual for a quick solution. Reset did not fix the problem and i can't change much in the menu settings.

Yes some caps did not look good but the brand is Capxon which is not good at all so i decided to replace them all.

Low output without distortion could mean low voltage from the PSU if it affects both channels. If you have low volume with distortion I would suspect faulty output ics and /or driver transistors/ ics.

There is no distortion , just low volume. Like 20% out of 100%.

You may have low voltage coming out of the PSU like a weak capacitor, open resistor, weak regular component or a faulty IC/transistor in the pre-amp stage.

The only thing that I may add is the over temp circuit. It will limit the PA output. How is the sound through the headphone jack? Attached see the service manual.

Harman/Kardon AVR 645 returning to stand-by after a few seconds.
                  by PowellSkier
A Harman/Kardon AVR 645 repair has been a hobby of mine for the past several years. My latest attempt involved the purchase of a DOA unit for part swapping and testing. The original AVR would power up then shut down after a few seconds. I completely tore down both units, found a couple of bad components and reassembled one of them. Same issue, no speakers connected. After extensive research I found a repair document from Harman/Kardon that explains the protection circuit in fantastic detail and provides specific test points for each fault (power, DC detection, overload & power) and the voltage...

Sony HCD-HX80R Amplifier Volume Control Problem
                  by crackedprint
I have a strange fault on a Sony amplifier. The volume control varies the display from MIN, then 1 up to 30 and then MAX as expected. At MIN there is no sound. However, at 1 it is quite loud and increasing above 1 does not change the sound level.

I have tried a Cold Reset as per the service manual.

I have looked at the I2C clock and data to volume control chip IC501 (BD3499FV). Data is only sent to IC501 when the volume is set to MIN or 1. At any other setting no data is sent to IC501.

I have looked all the way through the service manual and tried many online...

What Zener Diodes on a Linear Power Supply
                  by caspian
                  Dear members,

I have a linear variable power supply with unknown brand name that I used for voltage injection.
Then it failed. I discovered that its transistors (Q1 and Q2) are shorted.
In addition, I discovered that its zener diodes are defective.
I can replace the burned transistors.
But I do not know the model of the zener diodes. the model number is not marked on the zener diodes.
Therefore, I cannot replace the zener diodes.
I do not want to test the zener diodes in a test circuit to discover their model or value.
                  no schematics are available...

                  Would I be able to swap a 0.27 Ohm Kx2 5W resistor for a 0.22 Ohm Jx2 5W resistor in a Harman/Kardon AVR? Cement type.
