    Infinity TSS-1200 Subwoofer issues

    Hello,

My Infinity tss-1200 subwoofer started giving me issues a few months ago. It started with a low hum/buzz and occasionally a chirp. Neither were consistent and would happen a few times daily or a few times weekly. Now the subwoofer is not working at all.

    The manual is found Here

I'm no expert at using meters, when looking at the schematic (bottom of document on the left), I've tested the voltages at AC1/AC3 and they are both around 50V. I've also tested at C4 and C9 (very bottom on right) with their volts ~14.5.

I also removed one of the large capacitors (3300uF80V) and tested with a capacitance meter. The reading was 2950uF. (Thanks to those who responded in my capacitor post). I also connected a 1.5V battery to charge the capacitor.. The reading was steady at 1.5V dropping 0.01 V every 10-15 seconds. (I have not tested the 2nd capacitor).

I've also looked over the board and haven't noticed any burnt/bulging caps or resistors, etc.

I've attached a few pictures. 1 pic is an overall view of the board (it's missing the one capacitor I removed). And there are 2 pics that show a copper coil with some gel-like substance. This gel looks like it's spread out and covered some of the components and went under others. Not sure what the gel is, but is that okay?

Now I'm at a lose. Can anyone give me ideas on what I should check?

That looks like glue. It should be okay. It doesn't look like the kind of glue that becomes conductive.

It looks like C78 is bulging.

I took out the cap at C78 and tested it. It's a 330uF16V but reading between 205-250uF. I also pulled another cap that is exactly the same and it doesn't read and capacitance at all.

So question.. would these bad caps be enough to kill the entire board?

          what about these:

I have a FRY's near me and I would be able to pick them up if they are suitable replacements.

no, NTE = some surplus crap that has been re-branded.

Definitely glue in the first pic. Oozed electrolyte would be around the leads of the capacitor.

I'd also suspect any Koshin caps to be failed. They're of very, very low quality. I've even seen a 1uF 50V Koshin cap fail high capacitance and high ESR, and it was only 8 years old.

Don't buy any caps from Fry's. Source the Panny FR from Digi-Key

I've replaced 2 capacitors, but still having issues. Not sure which direction to take..

So it is still dead? What DCV do you get between the two legs of those two caps? The power LED is on when the audio input signal is detected?

Which two caps did you replace?
