    Harman Kardon HK3490/230 blows power-transistor

I have a Harman Kardon receiver (HK3490/230) which has blown its end power-transistor (2SD2401 - physical damage). Both fuses are toast also.

This has happend before when a portable device had been connected and disconnected. I replaced the power-amp and its companion 2SB1570 and could not find anything else wrong - replaced the fuses and it was running again, until a few days ago. My son connected his tabled to a line-input and played some music. After disconnecting it, the receiver produced some smoke and died - hence fried 2SD2401 (cracked and hole in it).

Did I overlook something the first time, or is there somekind of designflaw a kind of dc-current after disconnecting something like a tablet? Some dead caps maybe?

Can anyone supply me a schematic of the mainboard (CUP12060) or point me in a good direction? This has happened only to channel 1 (right/red), channel 2 (left/white) has not died on me.

Never plug or unplug anything with the unit on. So many people have damaged their equipment that way. The plug will make a momentary short circuit in the socket and blow something. That's probably why it's only one channel that is blowing out, because the same area of the plug is shorting.

What's worse is if the fuse blows and the user wraps it in tin foil and turns it back on. Saw that once.

HiFi Engine has the HK 3470 maybe that will be close enough. http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_lib...n/hk3470.shtml .

I would check for poor solder connections in that channel of the amp. Here is the manual
Also check (and adjust if required) the bias for that channel after replacing the transistors.

Thanks for the suggestions and schematics. I've never had any issues disconnecting devices in this way on other receivers/amps, short circuiting an input should not be a problem (if connected to ground that is). This receiver cannot handle it, that has been proven. I will create a buffer to prevent further blowouts. Thanks again.

Harman/Kardon AVR 645 returning to stand-by after a few seconds.
          by PowellSkier
A Harman/Kardon AVR 645 repair has been a hobby of mine for the past several years. My latest attempt involved the purchase of a DOA unit for part swapping and testing. The original AVR would power up then shut down after a few seconds. I completely tore down both units, found a couple of bad components and reassembled one of them. Same issue, no speakers connected. After extensive research I found a repair document from Harman/Kardon that explains the protection circuit in fantastic detail and provides specific test points for each fault (power, DC detection, overload & power) and the voltage...

Harman Kardon sub TS11 (ds15 amplifer) blows fuse and mosfets
          by BlackScreen_22
Hi, I'll start by saying that I'm not an expert and I've reached a point where I don't know what to try/do anymore...
Starting from the beginning: I opened this subwoofer for the first time with a very strong smell of burnt electrical components, I realize that on the amplifier board there is a hole between V+ OUT and GND about the size of a finger, the damaged components were the shorted mosfets, two damaged zener diodes and two capacitors. I bought everything, I fixed the hole by cutting the pcb and putting a piece of a perforated board.
I had no problems connecting mosfets and capacitors,...

old X58 triple channel board... memtest86 memory speed?
          by eccerr0r
Anyone run memory speed tests with an old X58-based triple channel 1st gen or any other >2 channel board? The one I have is a Gigabyte I think.

Anyway I had four 4GB DDR3-1333 modules in the 6 memory slots and got around 11GB/sec memory speeds assuming that it went dual channel since it didn't have enough modules for triple channel. Now I stuck in two more 4GB modules, but they are DDR3-1600. I'm still getting 11GB/sec speeds according to memtest86...

Just wondering, anyone do memory speed analysis on these triple (and higher) channel memory boards? Are there any...

          Would I be able to swap a 0.27 Ohm Kx2 5W resistor for a 0.22 Ohm Jx2 5W resistor in a Harman/Kardon AVR? Cement type.
