    Polk MOMO 400.4 crackles

Hello all, I have a polk audio MOMO 400.4 Amplifier that I am attempting to repair, I have so far replaced some old cheap caps and a couple of suspiciously low reading transistors, I have found that when I hook this up I get a static noise through one channel on the front and one side on the rear, It goes away when I apply pressure or (FLEX) The board which leads me to believe I have a loose solder joint somewhere in that area. I have never done any reworking, My idea was as dumb as it sounds is to stick the thing in the oven for a while??????? Or can I hit it with a heat gun??? Not sure what exactly what to do? Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you very much appreciated.

    Hi,

I wouldn't stick it in the oven as you're more likely to damage other components long before you fix the suspected bad joint. Same goes with a heat gun if you're not careful.
I would look around any high current areas for microscopic rings around solder joints and reflow them with an iron. (if you find any) Difficult to be more specific without seeing the board. Can't see anything on the Web either.

    Good luck

Hey Thank you for that, Probably saved my amp, I think I have found the suspected joints, it seems the SMD caps in a couple of spots have come loose, I can push down on them a bit and the audio comes back clear. Not sure weather to remove them completely,? or to just try and resolder around the pads? what do you think? If I use my heat gun to remove the cap will it damage it?
      Thanks again

Assuming you have a proper SMD heat gun and not just a 'paint stripper' type then using the regulated temperature for no longer than the SMD component profile states, it shouldn't do any damage. You can remove and rework, although most manufactures would not recommend re-using components.
If what I'm saying doesn't make any sense then I would suggest you carefully use the iron and attempt a resolder.

        Good luck

ever replaced an SMD aluminum cap with a radial electrolyte? Can this be done? There is tons of room in this particular application for the caps, any advantages to using the surface mount other than the size? Thanks again,

Yes, you can do that. People do it all the time. Bend the leads and solder them onto the pads. Make sure you leave the leads long enough to get the soldering iron under the cap.

You could probably put a little flux on the solder pads and remelt the solder with a soldering iron to stick the original caps back down without removing or replacing them.

+1 for flux. Flux is your friend with surface mount.

Polk Audio RTi100 Plate Amplifier won't power on and intermittently honks and buzzes
                  by MrCommunistGen
My childhood best friend was killed about 9 years ago. His parents are finally letting go of his things, and they offered me his Polk RTi100 tower speakers. The Polk RTi100 towers are one of a handful of designs from the early 2000s that is a full range 3-way tower with a built-in self-powered subwoofer. This is accomplished with a plate amp integrated into the speaker input panel.

I think they used them for a while, but they've been sitting for at least a few years now. After about 40 hours of driving to their house and back (both they and I have moved in the last 9 years) I got...

Polk PSW125 capacitors choices for a beginner.
                  by Eh546
I was looking to repair my Polk PSW125 subwoofer plate amplifier, i've checked around the web and it seems to be a capacitors problem.

Took apart the amp, and made a visual inspection, everything's seems fine, fuse ect no burn marks, but i noticed 3 caps that were a little bit bulged. One 400v 150uf, one 50v 47uf, and two 63v 47uf.

I noted each caps voltages and uf anyways, and made a list on digikey. Some recommended Nichicon and Panasonics ones (FR and FM) serie. So I tried to stay with the Panasonics FM-A serie.

I would like to know if the caps i selected...

Polk csi40 center ch speaker crossover caps replacement
                  by budwich
Did a "gross" impedance measurement of the inputs on my polk csi40 center channel speaker. It showed about 4ohms. Seemed kind of low. There are two midrange drivers and one twitter ... 2 way system.
All measurements at the drivers seem ok in the 4 - 6 ohm range (the two mid range are in series).

Anyway, in the crossover on the tweeter side, there are two caps in parallel basically leaving an inductor .... "nice simple setup", especially when no schematics around. The question is finding a replacement. One is a TI .47uf met 100vdc while other is a 9.1uf...

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH - Ideapad 3 well known solder joint issues
                  by Nagyesz
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH, which has started exhibiting the well-known issues of the Lenovo IdeaPad 3.

All stress tests run perfectly, and there are no performance issues. However, the solder joints are almost certainly starting to fail. If the top two screws on the back are not screwed in, moving the screen results in a BSOD or, in some cases, a slight artifact and freeze. This is a 2023 notebook..

How can I extend its lifespan? Could reflow help?

It has ryzen 5 5500h, rtx 2050, no soldered ram.

                  Example of the artifacts:

Acer Helios 500 (PH517-51) - unexpected reboots when laptop is warm (cold solder joint issue?)
                  by Mirenia
                  Hi everyone,

got an Acer Helios 500 Laptop (PH517-51) for diagnosing with a strange issue:

The laptop runs for a while (1-2 hours, sometimes less) and then suddenly shuts completely off, like someone pulled the power cord and restarts immediately after on its own.
If this happened once, then the laptop only runs for a few minutes until restart.
This happens regardless while staying in windows or uefi or in a linux environment.

At first I thought of a normal overheating issue, but as I monitored temps with HWInfo64, nothing seems very hot.
