Altec Lansing V2220 - Problem (Free pile find)

As the title says, I picked up a fairly clean pair of Altec Lansing V2220 speakers. They sound quite decent, and feel solidly heavy. However when volume is adjusted there is a horrible crackling hissing sound.
What is the problem and how do I fix it?

You mean (only) during the time you're twisting the volume pot? If yes, then there's your culprit

If it happens only when adjusting volume, then the volume control may be dirty. Shoot it with some Caig Deoxit D5 and turn back and forth about twenty times. Do it three times about 12 hours apart. Then use Caig Shield to replace the lube in the switch. That will clean the switch.

I don't think you need the expensive cleaners and lubricants. I don't think it's worth spending the money on Deoxit and lubricant for computer speakers.

I have been using the "bad" contact cleaner that doesn't contain any lubricant. It works fine, but I'm sure someone will have a story about a potentiometer failing because someone didn't use the lubricated contact cleaner.

Spray it into the slot on the body of the potentiometer. It's usually on the bottom, facing the circuit board.
