Altec Lansing 5100 subwoofer speakers rip themselves!

I admit that the music was quite loud, but not so loud to damage the speakers.

Suddenly I heard some major distortion from the sub and I decided to take out the cover to examine the subwoofer speakers. The "paper" actually fell of the speakers in a ring shape. Touching the paper it is dissolving like it is 50 years old!

How that happened? Is it possible to fix them? Are there replacements?

    Dry rot.

It might be possible to get them re-coned/refoamed.

This place has both kits and service: http://www.simplyspeakers.com/

I found a local repair service and I sent the speakers there:

      http://www.megafoniki.gr/

They told me the repair is going to cost ~40 euros both.

There is no reason to apologize. If it weren't you I wouldn't have a clue that they are fixable! Thank you

My dad has some old 200W Pioneer speakers that ripped like that after many many years of hard service . He repaired them himself with some fake leather material IIRC. That was some 15 years ago. I was a kid and I barely remember. They still work great to this day, though. And FYI, my dad didn't spend much effort on them, so this is probably something you could do yourself. I think I might have a picture of them somewhere on one of my computers. Will have to look.

I hate it when manufacturers use cheap suspensions, though. Not in your case, I am just giving an example: Probably, 12+ years ago I bought a pair of Kicker Comp VR's and put one in an enclosure, but the other has been in it's original box all this time. I thought, "Why not just sell the unopened one; I'm never gonna use it." So I open it and my finger goes right through the suspension like wet toilet-paper. !@#@$(*& So I check the other one that's in an enclosure and it does the same thing. #@*$(&

^ If the suspensions were made of foam, no surprise then. Cheap foam degrades rather fast. Someone gave me a really cheap pair of ear buds. After about 1 year, the foam just literally disintegrated to dust.

I just wanted to inform you that the speakers were repaired by Megafoniki. I received them 3 months ago but I couldn't remember about that thread to update it. It took too long for the suitable replacement parts to be found, but the result is excellent

                    Nice!

If only this happened after last September, maybe you could have tried something like this too:
                    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...&postcount=112
FYI, those speakers still work. In fact, I just cranked them some again today (been doing that almost every day after classes). Granted these are efficient "oldschool" speakers that don't need as much driver excursion as newer "active" setups, but I think paper could have still worked for your drivers too. Anyways...

What are you planning on blasting?

Those are for my sister's desktop pc.

                      My desktop uses those: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=594

and a Philips FW330 hifi for rear speakers.

The sound quality is excellent and the volume is more than enough for me.

I love 80s and 90s but I have no problem listening today's music as long as it has some decent sound and lyrics.

Help with replacing Capacitors on Altec Lansing ATP 3
                        by yuzupatogik
                        Hello,
I have this old (2004?) Altec Lansing ATP3 and i would like to replace the capacitors. I have identified 34 out of the 36 of them as Samxon GR of various capacities and voltages.

I can't find datasheets for the Samxon in any of the following variants:

10000uF 25 v - this one i really want to replace because i suspect it is what causes a dull hum regardless of the volume knob position or if the source is plugged in. I am eyeballing the Rubycon 25PK10000MEFCGC18X35.5 for this purpose. So if i pay a 10x the price part for shipping i might as well go ahead and...

I've got a subwoofer that I've had for nearly 20 years, it did come with a basic remote which I've lost. It's a generic make of subwoofer, I can't see a brand sticker on it. It comes with 2 speakers.

Question recently I've connected it up to my tv which has greatly improved the sound on my tv, however I'd like to be able to mute the subwoofer when ads come on or just mute it when the phone rings etc. I tried using a cheap all in one tv remote on the subwoofer and the volume button would only work to increase volume but not turn it down or mute it

                        Is there a way of...
