    Microwave advise please

    Hi All,

I am trying to diagnose a faulty microwave oven and have checked the following components.

Transformer – The primary and secondary windings have low resistances and no shorts to earth or between pri/sec.

The high voltage capacitor (1.05uF/2200V) measures fine with no shorts to earth.

The diode is not shorted or open circuit and when connected to a 9V battery drops 4V.

The magnetron has a low resistance across the terminals and has no resistance to earth.

I’ve put a clamp meter around one of the primary lines to the transformer and measured about 4A (240V) when the microwave is ‘on’.

A cup of water in the microwave does not heat in any way.

My gut feeling is that the magnetron is suspect but I’d appreciate any opinions on this.

    Many thanks.

You are probably correct in your determination of what the issue is

Depending on the model of your microwave would determine weather or not replacing the

Last to check is for open filament wiring at the connector/feed-through capacitors or for a bad connection there, or inside the can at the EMI chokes. Magnetron filament is low voltage, high current around 3.3VAC 11A for 36W, but caution it's at the (-ve) high voltage potential and not something to measure safely.

Measuring mains 4A is a bit misleading becuase there is the transformer's magnetizing current and the power factor needs to be taken into account. So it's not really 4A used, if you have a power meter check how many W it's using.

The magnetron is a Toshiba 2M303H(EX) and I can't find a replacement in the UK.

        How generic are magnetrons?

The one I need is in this article:

Are you able to find the specifications for the one you have and match it up as close to what you have now

This aspect is going to very important as well to the one you have “ Type of Outline—> Direction of air flow and mounting patterns ”

Which there several different air flow patterns and different mounting variations so you would have to match this as well

I replaced the magnetron and it cured the problem.

            Many thanks to all.

That's good you got it fixed. Especially over counter ones are so expensive.
Where did you buy the replacement magnetron in the UK?

The microwave was made by Electrolux and the magnetron was supplied by them as a spare item. The price was £70 including delivery.

                  by valvashon
This poor microwave oven was purchased by my former employer in 2019 (it's a 7/2018 build) and lasted for about 3 months before making a terrible noise when in use. I determined that it was the main transformer and contacted Toshiba. They asked for a picture of the cord cut in half and the serial number, and then credited my boss' credit card. Rather than sending it to the e-waste, I bought a transformer on eBay and thought I'd try flipping it. Discovered that used microwave ovens aren't worth much but in for a penny, in for a pound as they say. It sat in my basement getting kicked and shoved...

I have a sharp microwave front panel connectors which link to the motherboard via ffc strips into push in connectors, see images, the connector strips are worn I have cut them back but they still don’t make a good connection any ideas how I can overcome this would be appreciated. All switches on panel which are touch type work fine, have thought about conductive pen or paint anyhelp appreciated....

Can anyone tell me the difference between MD-801FMR-1 / MD-801FTR-1 and MD-801EMR-1 microwave HV transformers?

All I can see is they are all 800W but wondered if they are inter changeable...

                  Xbox series x advise
                  by Rickkap
                  Hi

I was hoping someone could give me some advise. A friend dropped off an Xbox Series X for repair—normally not something I deal with, but I'm helping out as a favour.

Currently, the console powers on with a beep and then immediately powers off. On closer inspection, the HDMI port clearly needs replacing, and there's significant liquid damage/ missing components.

Before I go down the rabbit hole of sourcing a donor board and replacing damaged components, I wanted to ask: based on the area I've marked in the photo, do you think this could be what's causing...

microwave rotary switch contacts go bad requently
                  by jm1234
Hi, I have a 11 year old microwave Siemens and the main function selector switch is a rotary type. It goes bad every few months, there are carbon (?) pads and the metal contacts that drive on them create concentric circle tracks from the residue.

I clean the tracks and the metal contacts with IPA and it works few months again. Here you can see the contacts:

Once I tried this contact cleaner: Kontakt 60 https://www.tme.eu/Document/3f58feb2...TAKT60.DTE.PDF, but it only lasted few weeks, so probably not a good choice.
                  Is there any...
