    Diode testing question

I have a diode that I want to test. The markings on it is 31DQ 06 8C. From the internet, I found that its forward voltage drop is about 0.6V. But when I test it with my multimeter in diode testing mode, the forward voltage drop is only 0.173V. Does this mean the diode is defective? Or is my multimeter not working? Or I got the wrong information on the diode from the internet?

    Re: Diode testing question

That is a Schottky rectifier diode, it will check with a lower voltage drop. it is good

      Re: Diode testing question

Different types of rectifiers/diodes have different forward drops: silicon vs. germanium vs. silicon carbide; schottky vs. standard recovery vs. (ultra-)fast recovery.

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

The Vf rating is based at 3Apk @25c.
if you look at the graph, the Vf will vary with the If, since your meter cannot put out high forward current so the Vf reading will be lower when you use your meter, see graph on page 3.

            Dead Corsair TX650M
            by quicknick
            Hello everyone,

PSU is made in late 2019 and seems barely used judging by the lack of dust on its innards.
+5Vsb is all right, grounding PS_on results in a relay clicking and nothing more, all outputs dead without even a flinch.

Checked inside, at first glance all seemed ok but then noticed something on the primary heatsink, which I promptly removed along with all its attached devices - there were clear signs of insulation breakdown above the C3D04060 diode. The device was overtightened from factory and the tab squished the sil-pad, it all was a matter of time,...

            A2251 L8100 Diode Drop .009V Resistance 2.6Ohm
            by abajor
Trouble shooting an A2251, it is giving me the behavior that all three USB jacks except the DFU port are reading 5.18V .24A, the DFU port draws no current.

Tried swapping that CD3217 from a donor, that changed to DFU port same behavior the adjacent USB port is now boot cycling, other side un effected.

Hindsight probably should have checked the diode drops first.

I removed L8100 to confirm that the PP1v1_S3 rail was "shorted" It reads about 2.4ohm and .009V on diode drop. The HighSide Low Side FETS before L8100 appear to be fine. Proper diode...

How To Test a P-channel Trench Mosfet Using A Multimeter In Diode Mode
            by dj8452000
I am new to electronics and I'm understanding most of what I'm reading but I have a mosfet on my board that I've identified as a P-channel Trench Mosfet. I haven't a clue how to test this and what I should expect to see with the multimeter probes. I am hoping someone with years more experience than myself can help me understand how to use a multimeter to read this. Please look at the drawing I have attached to this and can you try to explain to me what I should be doing with my multimeter in diode mode and what results I should expect from a good mosfet?...

Dell E7450 LA -A961P - diagnostics after flooding and damaged PD817, PD5 diodes
            by bpjl
            Hi,

I have La-A961P Rev: 1.0 (A00) from a flooded laptop on the table. The computer was flooded with tea and at the same time the power supply was disconnected, the battery was removed immediately and the laptop was turned upside down.

I looked at the mainboard, but I don't see any marks of water damage. Maybe the liquid did not reach MB, or maybe I just don't see it.
During the inspection, I noticed a burned (charred on one side) double diode PD817.

            Voltage drops during PD817 measurements:
            - PIN1-PIN3 forward biased = 0.137V...
