I haven't worked with lead-free solder that I know of, unless it was for sweating copper tubing.

The flux I use is a wave-solder flux by Kester, but I don't have the number. I reduce it with 99% IPA and it works very well. It appears to produce very energetic deoxidation action when heated to solder melting temperature, so
although its expiration date is long past due it still activates well enough for hand soldering. Wave soldering no doubt has more critical requirements due to the nature of the process.

I have an ample supply of 63/37 eutectic solder which may last longer than I do.

I cleaned another roll of braid tonight. The first soaking in acetone leaves the solvent an amber tone that is overshadowed by the green tint. Subsequent washings with 99% IPA leave the solvent with the amber cast, diminishing to clear after 2 IPA washes.

I think the solder-wick branded braid I bought is old and some of the copper was oxidized.

Or it is bogus, old, and some of the copper oxidized. It's OK now after cleaning.

best to buy solder wicks with no clean flux and avoid ebay and use local electronics stores Mouser Element14/newark,Farnell or Digikey.

If you are lucky enough to be in Australia, i love the japanese made goot desolder at Jaycar.

I bought 6 rolls from my local Radio-Shack when it closed down and they were clearance priced for like $0.22 per roll. But they don’t work great. I’m going to try the acetone soak & IPA rinse. How long does it need to be in the acetone? Also, I’m assuming that I submerge it completely in acetone?

What you need is flux, not wash it... There's only so much you can do by just washing it.

Well, washing it would be a good idea, if the flux that's already on it was bad or has degraded from age. Then you should apply fresh flux.

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

HP EliteBook 840 G6 how to dump without desoldering
              by hans_meier
              Hi,

I have an "HP EliteBook 840 G6" and would like to know how to dump the BIOS flash chip without desoldering. Putting 3.3V on VCC of the BIOS chip with a programmer does not work (seems to enable the PCH). I have read some general notes about connecting the CPU reset to ground or to bypass oscillators. There does not seem to be a reset line for Intel i5-8365U. Just RSMRST, but it's only accessible on the other side of the mainboard. Is there an easy way to dump the flash without desoldering and without removing the mainboard? Does anyone have experience with this? Maybe...

18VDC PSU completely dead - ZD-915 desoldering station
              by armini
              Hi everyone!

Three years ago I got a ZD-915 desoldering station which failed just after a few months of light use. During a short desoldering session, the station simply shut down, and since then it has been completely dead and unresponsive. The failure was silent, without any pops.

Due to a lack of time, I set it aside and didn't look at it.

Yesterday, I took it apart and did some basic measurements. The 18v terminal shows 0v. In addition, there is no visible damage to the board itself.

According to replies in 18VDC PSU has dropped to...
