  • Re: Open Neutral you say? A story of carnage at Gooontrons house.

The configuration you describe is improper in any location in the world. I think you have demonstrated the reason for this requirement: The damage that your equipment suffered. Please have it corrected.

This is the section of the Canadian Electrical code which addresses not connecting live (ungrounded) conductors directly to the buss bars immediately following the load side of an electrical service meter:

  • Re: Electric mouse/rat trap power supply

If you can detect a mouse or rat's presence and trigger the HV output, you won't need 15 seconds to do the job. Do you have the Victory schematic?...

I know this is an older thread, but... So how about not connecting or disconnecting the RV power cord unless the supply circuit has been turned off?

  • Re: Electric mouse/rat trap power supply

I have a Victory electronic mouse/rat trap. It has a stated output of 4,000 Volts. Runs off 4 size C cells.
Works through the feet, not the fur.
Very effective. Use Tootsie Roll candies for bait.

  • Re: Where to get cheap electronics books

Several years ago I attended a hamfest near the Six Flags Magic Mountain park just north of Los Angeles, CA, and near closing time on its last day I wound up with the bed of my Toyota pickup half filled with all manner of electronics books. Several vendors did not want to take the books back home or toss them so they were offered to me for free. Even if they had been purchased they would have been very inexpensive.

I think this probably occurs fairly often at such swapfests. There were a lot of useful books in the lot.

  • Re: What is an M8348 IC?

Thanks, budm. So it is an LM4250.

A photo would just show a small circuit board with an 8 pin DIP package and a handful of caps and resistors. Now I have a path to follow, thanks again, lax

  • What is an M8348 IC?

Hello. I havee been examining a small test tool formerly owned by the Late Great audio designer James Bongiorno. It has a single 8 pin dip which is almost certainly some type of opamp.

However I've had little luck finding useful info about it online.

The only other lettering on it is 4250C/

Thanks in advance for any help with this, lax

  • Re: Variac 20A AC Power Auto Transformer What can you it for examples

That is a BIG variac. Few things you should be aware of. Don't mess with the substance that may be used between the windings and brush.

You cannot accurately check them using an ohmmeter. The brush design is such that it needs a certain amount of current through it to conduct properly. If you are going to test one, power an incandescent lamp or power resistor that won't exceed the max current rating (not so much a problem on yours but there are lots of smaller types in the field). Evaluate smooth...

Not considered a lazy approach to wire stripping in aircraft systems when I was in the U.S. Navy. It was the only method allowed. Same with anti wicking tweezers.

  • Re: voltage revs variation petrol generator.

Very true. I had a motorhome (older) with an Onan genset. Someone had messed with the adjustments, and it was producing about 170 VAC.

All of the 120 v appliances had suffered various degrees of damage. Including the destruction of the $300+ "safety control boards" in the forced air heater and the water heater.

On an Onan genset, the rpm is set by the position of the air-vane governor and not by either of the adjustments near the carburetor. Those are for controlling output frequency when...

  • Re: fake desoldering wick

I haven't worked with lead-free solder that I know of, unless it was for sweating copper tubing.

The flux I use is a wave-solder flux by Kester, but I don't have the number. I reduce it with 99% IPA and it works very well. It appears to produce very energetic deoxidation action when heated to solder melting temperature, so
although its expiration date is long past due it still activates well enough for hand soldering. Wave soldering no doubt has more critical requirements due to the nature of the process.

    I have...

  • Re: fake desoldering wick

I don't think so, the flux turned the solvent an amber color, pretty typical for rosin flux.

Well the good news is the treatment was successful. Could well be a remedy for
some of the other braid product cited earlier.

  • Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Best computer score was about two years ago. A neighbor knocks on my door and tells me someone just put three computers in one of the facility dumpsters. Which are frequently used by non residents as well.

So I head over immediately head over there and two were still there.

So I scored two nice Dell Dimension desktops with XPS motherboards, core 2 duos. Two very high speed CD readers in each, no hard drives. I kept one for spare parts and put one in the driver's seat. With what was once a hot PCIe GPU installed, 4 GB...

  • Re: fake desoldering wick

I don't know if it's fake, but I bought ten rolls of "Solder-Wick" branded braid from All Electronics, which did not work. Could be stale?

Then one day recently I had an idea to soak it in acetone to remove the old flux, which it did. But also rendered was some nasty green stuff (copper oxide?)

After flushing the wick thoroughly it became nice and shiny as well as much more flexible and open-weaved. Now when dipped in some Kester liguid rosin flux it works perfectly.

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    New member, hello

I found badcaps while researching some older ELNA's and I am glad I did. Useful tips for troubleshooting electronics are not the easiest thing to find on the internet.
Thanks for having me here, " lax luthier "
