    Parallel Schottkey Diodes

    I see a lot of disparaging remarks about using rectifier diodes in parallel. This configuration is not always a sign of cost cutting or poor design. Naturally, discreet Si diodes in parallel will be unrepredictable in their operation. It is possible that Si rectifier diodes on the same substrate would behave better. However it is good to remember that Si diodes have a negative temp. coefficient. As the temperature rises, Vf will go down, which almost assures that only one diode will take the entire amount of current. Probably not worth the effort for power rectifiers.

    Schottkey diodes on the other hand have a positive temperature coefficient. Parallel Schottkey diodes self-adjust their Vf with temperature variations to share the current equally. Parallel Schottkey's, especially on the same substrate or on the same heat sink is a workable arrangement and shouldn't be taken as a sign of poor design practice.

    When the junction temperature of a Schottky rectifier rises, forward voltage VF is reduced
    and this results in lower conduction state losses. To simulate losses for the secondary
    side rectifier under elevated temperatures, a SPICE model at Tj = 85 °C was extracted for
    NXP Semiconductors 40 V, 5 A IF(AV) MEGA Schottky rectifier PMEG4050ETP. The model
    card is shown in Ref. 1 “Application Note AN11310 FlatPower Schottky rectifier in low
    power adapter.”

    The schottky diode is a majority carrier device making conductivity modulation
    impossible. This makes the forward voltage more dependent on the forward
    current than in equivalent PIN-diodes. The forward voltage of schottky diodes has
    negative temperature dependency, meaning the forward voltage is dropping for
    increasing temperatures

      What Zener Diodes on a Linear Power Supply

      Dear members,

      I have a linear variable power supply with unknown brand name that I used for voltage injection.
      Then it failed. I discovered that its transistors (Q1 and Q2) are shorted.
      In addition, I discovered that its zener diodes are defective.
      I can replace the burned transistors.
      But I do not know the model of the zener diodes. the model number is not marked on the zener diodes.
      Therefore, I cannot replace the zener diodes.
      I do not want to test the zener diodes in a test circuit to discover their model or value.
      no schematics are available...

      A Dead/DOA Gigabyte GP-P450b 450W ATX PSU

      More eBay specials: this time a Gigabyte GP-P450b 450W ATX PSU for $8 with free S&H. Listed “For part/not working”, as usual. Showed up in a beat up EVGA box without any padding… but that's understandable given the total price. PSU made it out fine without damage. It's a non-modular (yay!), pretty modern-day looking PSU with a black paint and all black cables (meh, not my favorite, but figure it's good to keep a few of these in case I do need one for a more modern PC build, just so my old gray boxes don't look too odd in there.)

      I just can't help it when I see a broken / for parts PSU on eBay that's listed for cheap and looks at least somewhat interesting. Well, OK, I won't lie – on the outside, this PSU looks anything but interesting. It's a plain gray box with colorful “spaghetti cables”.




      What mostly drew me into buying it is its 2x PCI-E power connectors...

      AcuRite 5 in 1 temperature sensor replacement repair

      Got a new victim:

      AcuRite 5 in 1 Iris outdoor weather station not updating the temperature / humidity anymore. The original sensor is a SHT21. Also there are identical other sensor manufacturers. I chose the HTU21D to replace the original SHT21. Both have identical specs. I've had two failure modes with these sensors.
      A: outside temp stuck at -40? It's cold here at times in Canada, but not that cold!
      B: stuck at some temperature and maybe updating once in 12 hrs or so.

      Easy solution is to go to AcuRite website and purchase the sensor. Right?...
