PCB protecter? Waterproofing? How to service?

I have a circuit board that seems to be cast in nylon? Rubber? Polyester? It's a controller for a transmission. I have seen this in controllers for aviation and generators, more industrial applications and it's usually pretty hard kind of like plastic. For the first time, this compound seems gummy, all most like rubber I can pick at it and slowly remove pieces. Does anyone know if there is a chemical or heat process to remove this stuff? I need to service this board.

Any idea how to remove? or re apply this stuff? Or any idea where I can find out more about it?

    depends on what it is.
if it's rubber then you need to scrape it,
if it's plastic then you can usually remove it with white spirit,
if it's epoxy then it's a bitch to remove and you need to use the end of the soldering iron.

How can I definitively determine what I have? Is there a wiki page somewhere? Or photos? Or a test I can perform?

see how it reacts to heat from a soldering iron.

        epoxy will soften slightly,
        plastics will melt & burn,
        rubber will do nothing really.

          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

Dell XPS 8940 | Manufacturing Mode? | No Service Tag
          by AustinCER
Hello, I currently have a Dell XPS 8940 in our office for repair.
          Service Tag: HG1Y673
The most recent BIOS is pictured below -- being available as an .exe on Dell website.

Needed a new motherboard due to power surge. The motherboard replacement was installed and upon power up it was booting to a display message - Manufacturing Mode Active -

Have not dealt with this issue before or what the proper steps are. I booted to the BIOS and manually entered the Service Tag, but upon each reboot -- the service tag is wiped and shows the Manufacturing Mode display message,...

Help Learning How to Remove Dell Service Tags
          by C.Levan
I work in a second hand PC shop and we primarily get our stock from the government and businesses which means sometimes we get BIOS locked devices coming through, a colleague of mine found a way to remove the service tag off a Dell Optiplex 7080 and using that .bin put it on another 7080 which basically allows us to re-use this .bin on problematic 7080 models. My end goal is to have a catalog of .bin files in-case one fails a BIOS update or has some other BIOS problem.
