Please help me identify this capacitor

Hi, can you please help me find the value of this capacitor? It's labelled "in K1000" or "1n K1000", or perhaps "ln K1000".

I believe it's metal film or polymer, but I have no clue what the inscription means.

I have quite a few units where this part has been fried due to a blown electrolytic cap, and it would be great if I could get them all repaired!

A picture of the part is attached.

    1nF (1 nano-farad, or 0.001uF)
    1000V
Yes it looks like a metal film capacitor.

Interesting, do you know how the electrolytic capacitor failure leads to this one's failure?
Got any pics of the failed electrolytic cap? Just curious as to what brand it is.

honestly I'm only guessing, as some of the electrolytes are bulging slightly, the problem may be elsewhere.

I've attached 2 pictures of the electrolytes. The blue one is definitely bulging, as I have another unit where the top is completely flat.

Could be the black one is meant to have a round top?

These pictures are of the same component on 2 different boards, different production runs. It's the ballast board for the mac 600 moving heads.

The board is called sgm 107471

I would remove the black plastic disc so you can actually see to top of the cap, sometime the disc is distorted into dome shape.
So the 0.001uF is bad for sure?
Pictures of the whole board, both top and bottom sides, will help.

They might not be bulging, I've seen many times where the plastic has deformed from heat. (normal heat)
Try pushing down on the top, if it is not bulging then the top will be able to be pushed down.

I can't find anything for "sgm 107471". Is this from a power inverter, or welder?

Film capacitors don't usually fail anywhere near as often as electrolytic caps. Something must be killing this cap. It might be too much ripple current, or too high of a voltage.

That black one does look a lot more bulged than any I have seen before. Wouldn't be surprised if that one was blown under the cover.

i second that, and 24th week of 2003 is pretty old for an 85' general purpose cap.

Sorry I never got back to you this thread. I meant to post some more pictures, then completely forgot about it.

The picture of the 1nF capacitor was from a functioning unit. The one I was replacing was burnt up. Replacing the 1nF capacitor solved the problem. The reason it broke down was most likely because the light bulb had failed, and the lamp kept retrying to ignite the lamp for hours before anyone took action and pulled the plug on it. That's just my guess.

And I think you were right about the electrolytes; they might have been OK, but I replaced them anyway.

Thanks for your help, it solved the problem, and all the units are now back in daily use.
