    TV recommendations

So, I've found myself in the market for about a 60" 3d TV that won't crap out on me in a few years ... any recommendations? Reliability and display quality (I'm a fan of deep blacks esp) are priority, I'll be connecting it to a sound system most likely so less concern there.

      Re: TV recommendations

Try getting a ex-stock Panasonic VT or ZT series plasma panel, available up to 65". You won't regret it. (About $2,200.)

If your budget doesn't extend quite as far as that, a Samsung 64" H5000 plasma (deepest blacks but PenTile display matrix) or 60/64" F8500 plasma (deep blacks) may be an option. They're available for about $1300 and $2000 respectively.

You could also consider an LG 55" OLED but they are about $2000. And also only available with a stupid curve in the screen. Infinite black level and piercing bright display creates incredible viewing quality. Reliability is completely unknown, so I'd definitely buy an additional warranty.

You can also look into getting a USED Pioneer 9G Kuro. The US model 60" PDP-6020FD is widely regarded in the industry as the best TV ever made (even modern commercially available TVs have not surpassed it with the sole exception of the 55" OLEDs.) It is 6 years old today. I have a Euro model 50" 9G Kuro on my wall. It's just a completely different viewing experience. Seriously, nothing compares to it. No 3D support though; I don't like 3D so that's fine for me.

Do not buy a large screen LED-LCD TV. In my opinion it's a world of disappointment. The picture is rubbish on such a large screen. It may be bright but there is no low level image contrast. LED-LCD is best for smaller screens, 40" and below. 4K UHD is also nothing special, so I wouldn't worry about missing out on that.

The worst I saw was a 90" Sharp LED-LCD in Costco. And it was only 1080p! You could see the pixels on it from about 10 foot away. And they wanted £3,600 for it! (About $5,000) What a rip off! If you want a screen that big, get a bloody projector!

Samsung PN50A550S1FXZA black areas are sometimes a deep red
        by magconpres
        Hi -

First, thanks to everyone on this forum that provides info. I have the power cycling problem that is well covered in other threads and have been able to trouble shoot it enough using info from this forum to isolate the problem to the main board, and suspect I have the capacitor problem that has been covered so well in other posts.

However, since I have the TV opened up, I thought I'd try to ix another problem I've been living with for a while.

In areas of scenes that are completely black I sometimes get a deep red instead of black. It's a very...

Recommendations of quality soldering station and (separate) hot air station
        by caprider
        Hey,

I'm looking for some recommendations of a decent quality soldering station and a separate hot air station. I'm just a hobbyist, so even if (ultra)premium tools are not required, I still want some good tools. They should be available in Europe.

I now have a TS100 and some soldering irons and looking for some better tools.

        1. Soldering station, budget around 200-240€
JBC BT-2BWA seems to be a good product in the budget.

        2. Hot air station, budget around 200€
Up to now I've found ATTEN ST-862D to be a good option....

Is there anything I can do with this deep burned motherboard? (GA401IV)
        by bogosort
        Hello,

I got this board that has a really deep burn that heats up and smokes when injecting voltage.

Here are photos of the burned one, a donor board for reference (missing the resistors) and the underside

Is there anything I could do with this?

        Thank you!...

TVs vs Computer Monitor Reliability & Failure Rate
        by nobbnobb1
Anecdotally, it seems to me that TVs fail much more often than computer monitors judging from personal experience and looking at the classified where people are getting rid of broken/malfunctioning TVs all the time.

So I'm just wondering if this is the case? Is there something inherent in the design of monitors that makes them more reliable? I would've thought they'd be operating under more severe conditions than a TV. For a typical family, a TV may only be on for a few hours every day. Whereas a monitor could be on 8+ hours, along with countless power cycles turning on/off as power...

Aluminum SMD caps vs thru hole caps (reliability)
        by 13mh13
The PCB motor for 1987 Technics SLP-120 CD player has slow spin-up issues. Similar to what another tech in the below video reported.

I replaced the three bi-polar 47uF electros but that made no difference. The orig three bi-polar 47uF electros tested okay on my ESR M-tester.
I have not tested/replaced those alum. SMD electro PCB caps.
Are Al smd caps are more prone to failure (or degradation) than regular thru-hole electros?
All the thru hole electros I removed / replaced on this CDP (and most...
