Re: resistor 5 band
They may have use tight tolerance due to it is used for current sensing circuit such as the resistor connected to the Source pin of the MOSFET. So you need to find out how this resistor is being used, since it went open, that means the MOSFET or what ever it is connected to is shorted out.Never stop learning

Re: resistor 5 band
@budm what do you think bro is it ok because i'm wondering because it maybe give me a defferent read out..from my multimeter after replacing...
now im going to buy a resistor 10 ohms 4band to replaced...
thanks for the replies and support..thanks BADCAPS.Comment

Re: resistor 5 band
Did you understand what Budm said?
In simple terms
Depending on where the resistor is being used it might be important to use one that has .25% tolerance
Testing with your multimeter makes no difference you cant measure tolerancePlease upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

Re: resistor 5 band
not sure if I am missing something here, (apologies if I am), but this is how I see it
resistor 10 ohms 25% tolerance = could measure anywhere between 7.5 ohms to 12.5 ohms resistor
resistor 10 ohms 5% tolerance = could measure anywhere between 9.5 ohms to 10.5 ohms resistor
making the 5% tolerance the more accurate resistor
therefore I would replace with a 5% tolerance in place of a 25% tolerance
but would not put a 25% tolerance where a 5% tolerance was
put me out of my misery if I am seeing this wrong
and please tell me where I am going wrong with my view of this
BTW what budm is also saying is that it is probable that if you just replace that resistor it will fail again until you find out what took it down, so check a few things around it, and buy a couple, good luckComment

Re: resistor 5 band
Yes you are missing something - a decimal point or 2
Tolerance is nought point two five not twentyfivePlease upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

Re: resistor 5 band
OK, it is used in the meter (I missed that in post 1), that is why it is high precision. Even if you put in new resistor, the meter will have to be re-calibrated or check the calibration to see if the meter is still within tolerance.Never stop learning

Re: resistor 5 band
heheheheheh I missed that as well - didnt realise the resistor was in the meter
must have been badly phrased.
missed in post 8 as well- Budm you did well to pick that up.Last edited by selldoor; 01-28-2014, 10:05 AM.Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

Re: resistor 5 band
That's why many beginner's engineering and science books emphasize to always put a 0 (zero) in front of the decimal point. I've personally seen many fellow students make that mistake (especially when transferring hand-written data into Excel).Last edited by momaka; 02-01-2014, 09:45 PM.Comment

by AskicHello,
attached is a picture with two resistors. I wonder what values are based on color of the band.
I have used this as a reference:
https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws...tor/res_2.html
Since there are 5 bands, the question is from where to start counting (what is the first band).
Based on this info, I can conclude that thick band is the last one.
Therefore the values are:
Left resistor - red(2) yellow(4) black(0) black (x1) brown (1% tol) = 240 ohm, 1% tolerance
Right resistor - brown(1) black(0) black(0) gold(x0.1)... -
Can anyone tell me how it's possible for a 5-band resistor to start with black?
If it really was a zero-ohm resistor it probably wouldn't have burned.
So if there are any ideas on the value of this resistor and how to read it, please let me know.
Greetings,
Jenne... -

I am trying to repair an ancient Dell 2209WA Monitor which suddenly shut off with a pop sound. On investigation found that one of the fusible resistors had blown. Further investigation identified multiple components as faulty because of which the fusible resistor blew. Please refer the attached circuit diagram showing the components that were found to be damaged.
1. FR950 - blown fusible resistor - 0.2 Ohm 1W
2. Q950 - shorted Q950 MOSFET - 650V 10A N Channel Mosfet
3. R835 - Blown Resistor - 20KOhm SMD resistor
4. D930 - Shorted Schottkey Diode...-

by mikey5791Hi to all forum members,
Got this faulty 350 watt atx psu dirt cheap from a local online seller as i am keen to use it as a learning tool to repair faulty power supply.
The faulty part is quite obvious from the burn area near the 16pin KA7500 BD pwm. The fuse is still intact with good continuity.
Upon power on ac, there is 5vdc standby power on cathode of diode D14 and about 10vdc on cathode of diode D13.(This should be the aux power to generate the 12v and 5v rail.)
Initially i replace the two burned resistors near my marked red arrow to 200 ohm resistor... -
I am curious if a 0402 resistor could go from 43 ohm to 0. In electronics class and my experience a resistor can degrade and gain resistance all the way up to not being able to conduct at all. I have never heard of a resistor decreasing in resistance and becoming 0 ohm or a dead short… that's not the direction they fail… or so I thought.
I was attempting to remove a wson8 chip on an iMac motherboard and it required a lot of heat, on one side of the chip were 3 0402 resistors that were very close. I popped the chip out unintentionally out of the tweezers and sent those resistors... - Loading...
